What happened to Chess Cafe?

Google search shows some threads here where it's discussed, like https://www.chess.com/forum/view/general/chess-cafe-update-and-cautionary-note

I get the impression that they used to have free articles, then put up a paywall, then sort of stopped altogether. Which, incidentally, is nothing like V3

Any idea why I keep getting "not responding" when trying to make chess moves (daily chess) Firefox?

One of the unfortunate things of Firefox Mozilla, it does not do a good job of memory management.  It hordes everything.  Eventually, you need to clear out the memory being used by Firefox manually---i.e., kill the process and restart the darn thing.  That's the only sure-fire way (as far as I know) to clean Firefox's memory so you don't get the dreaded "not responding" messages.

Now, I would NOT put it past Microsoft's engineers to totally mess with Firefox users and purposely put in some O.S. hacks to drag down Firefox... but, I have no evidence otherwise.  Just watch how much CPU time Firefox is using.  Typically, if it gets above a certain level, its just moving memory boxes around rather than processing content, at which point, a fresh restart should clear up the issue.  Sadly, that will interrupt Live Games.  However, if you have a fast enough system, one can often re-connect prior to a timeout.

Yeah, Firefox can get some memory issues. Probably isn't  a bad idea to close and reopen before getting into Live and limit the number of open tabs while playing. For the rest of the site it shouldn't normally be a big issue.

One other thing is to verify Flash is blocked from loading by default. You only need it for videos on v2. However, the ad code apparently tries to load it, at login and Live loading, and I have seen the Flash process cause issues in the past (and the the plug-in container process).

Lately I have seen more and more cases of chess.com staff caring less and less about the members' wishes.

I don't recommend Chrome, either... though I have it.  I prefer Firefox as my main browser.  I just need to know that if I've watched a ton of YouTube videos or played on FB too long, that Firefox will need to be re-started shortly.

Torch, Chrome, Opera, .. even Chromium, are fine alternatives.  I just don't like the idea that by using Chrome, Google knows even more than they already do about me.  Ditto for using Windows 10 (if you haven't been conned into the upgrade yet, don't..!).  Firefox is one of the few stubborn open source holdouts that has yet to acquiesce to private and government intrusion algorithms in to its code.  (Which is probably one reason it does not flow well on Windows...)

I find v2 much easier to use than v3. It's more user-friendly, imo.

Awfull interface change.

Yeah v2 is better because:

1. You can change group themes and now you can't

V2: If you're an admin or sa, you can change themes for groups

V3: Now they only allow Super admins to change it.

2.  You can use voice chat but now you can't

V2: You must be friends to use voice chat and premium membership.

V3: Now you can't, and what if you want to do a tounge twister?\

And more... But V2 killed my theme
