Hello all, reference to this topic, https://www.chess.com/forum/view/suggestions/change-in-news-functionality, I heard back from Support Staff: Amelia replied - I have reported it to Erik (owner), whether it gets changed back is dependent on a few factors.

FWIW News Alerts seemed to be working in V3 for me this morning.  I have yet to check V2.

Steikt

Someone asked how it works in v3: You get an alert where it says "(name of the group) posted news, when you click on it it takes you to a list of all news posts, there you click on the newest article. You do not get a PM from chess.com. Also, you have to click on the alert, not on the name of the group, because if you do it takes you to the notes.

Deathwi5h

Similar to v2....seems the present is the future......not to rosy IMHO

VirtualKnightJoakim

News Alert "works" in v2/v3. ..just much less effective than old way where they were sent as PM. In large groups like MONIKA only 0.4% view news after change. So no longer an effective tool as it was previously.

Spacebux

Ah... yes, I sit corrected - it only takes you to the list of news items in the group.

SolitaireBat

I believe that the "News" were meant to be an _effective_  system of communicating vital organisational info to group members. It makes no sense to change the system in such a way that a group member can inadvertently swipe of a news notification. He or she has many ways of ignoring news willingly -- including the leaving of such groups whose admins abuse the news system by issuing too many -- so there's absolutely no reason to introduce a faulty system which can deprive them of the info by mistake.
Bottom line: please, bring the old system back!

KostasRallis

Ι totally agree with the O.P.

After this change happened not only a tiny insignificant percentage reads he news, but they also ignore the alerts.

This makes trying to get players for team matches far more difficult. If you also consider the fact that sending private messages to players is considered "spam".

The current messaging system is really annoying... The players simply ignore it and if I am not mistaken, previously once the admin sends a team message, his name was appearing while now it is just the team name which somehow the members don't really pay attention to that. I hope chess.com can do something about it

Good to hear word is getting out there. I agree the old way was better and I hope to see a change. I also wonder if the change was intentional or not. If it was intentional I guess not enough thought was put behind it.

This should be solved soon, I hope, in v2 if v3 is far away. Anyway, I consider ilmago's idea very interesting. We could bring out more intelligent options for admins to use. Here are some ideas:

- admins should be able to send a news piece to a customized list of members, not to all only: they should be able to select destinaton members based on criteria as: rating/T.O. percentage/games finished etc.

- admins should be able to create internal categories for news: - call to registration, news about team, etc. and members should be able to subscribe or unsubscribe for each category.

Steikt

Yes unu! Great ideas

Hartsteen

Unu! That's good thinking. Such options would be a great help for all members of groups and teams. But I guess we are only a few hundred thousands.

VirtualKnightJoakim

Great ideas, but maybe move to a new forum so they do not get lost here? Intent with this forum is to urgently restore old news functionality which hopefully should be possible? Feature request for new functionality may need separate brainstorming, analysis, design and prioritization?

If some makes a new forum with ideas for enhanced and new news functionality, feel free to post url here as a cross reference...

Cheers,

unu

Agreed VK. Sorry for going off-topic. Main focus should be on returning to old functionality as soon as possible.
I just created a new topic for suggestions for new admin tools:  https://www.chess.com/forum/view/suggestions/suggestions-for-new-admin-tools

VirtualKnightJoakim

Really interesting discussion and brainstorming in above forum... I recommend that everyone track it

Schincariol

Okay I agree the old News is very good.Smile

ilmago

unu has mentioned some extra wishes.

I guess what would be really helpful for implementation is someone with an idea about how to introduce the very most basic group news functionality into V3 in the way people seem to wish it to be.

Of course the messaging system in V3 is built on a different concept, and the alert system in V3 is built on a different concept, than in V2.

"Going back to how it used to be" is not the option that is going to resolve it for V3.

Of course V2 itself has changed a bit too for the period of having V2 and V3 available in parallel. So I am not sure that just "going back" is a realistic option even just for V2. It definitely would only at most influence things in the intermediate time in which the old V2 is still available before V3 takes over.
