I used to be a basic gold member since I registered for chess.com. That'd be around 5 months now.

I recently decided to stop using these services. Why? Well for one I couldn't afford it as a simple student.

The other reason is a reason worth quitting Chess.com over all!

Where do I start? The [terrible] connectivity of the mobile app? Where I have 1:00 and my opponent has 1:20 and suddenly he still has 1:20 after 10 seconds but I'm down to 30 seconds?

Oh great. You have a million features but the one it's all about is so flawed that you can't possibly use it. FYI I'm using a good internet connection and my connectivity strength is shown as green!

And then? Then there's the community. What to say about these rude [people]? I get angry sometimes and I regret it imemdiately when I lash out at other players - but that's mainly due to my bad temper. But people here seem to actually from their nature on be very very rude.

First of all they don't say a word, they don't talk at ALL, they will never respond to anything and WHEN they say something it's usually something ridiculously rude. I feel like the reports go for nothing. I'm tired of playing against [rude people]. Especially when my moves get delayed and my opponents win extra time ;) Good job Chess.com [Moneysuckers].

I'm off to [another chess site]

[Took out the vulgarity for you - if you report stuff, it does get actioned. You can also reach out to any of the mods that are on line - check the Help & Support chat forum, but you can also check the Live Chess Moderator group. Screen shots are always helpful. We have 10 times the number of players as other chess sites, and unfortunately that means proportionately more trolls as well as great people - Mod.]

My hat's off to you, if you can invest that $29 a year you just saved and get a really first rate education from it.

I disagree with the mod's calculation that because chess.com has 10 times as many users, it has proportionately more trolls.  Chess.com may have the best trolls, or the most erudite trolls, but I don't think it has more than its fair proportion.

I don't know what the proportion actually is but let's say it's 1 in 10. If 1 in 10 here exhibit troll-like behavior from time to time, I don't think that is any higher than anywhere else and the trolls generally appear more polite than trolls elsewhere, owed partly to the language censoring software and the actions of thoughtful mods. The worst trolls feel emasculated without the f word and head off to greener pastures.

Writing in to support does help. Just last week, we got someone muted who had been very abusive to players, accusing many that he had lost to of using computers.  He had 48 pages of mostly negative comments on his notes pages that he wore like a red badge of courage. Few had bothered to actually report the man to support (using the support contact form). He won't be bothering anybody for a while (or at least until his punishment is concluded.) If he is reported again afterwards, the punishment becomes more severe.

If you are seriously bothered by someone and you can't ignore it, please use the contact form. It does make a difference.

It's good to let off steam from time to time and I hope you come back when you are feeling better.

If it wasn't for some of the people others like to call trolls, this site would be pretty boring.

Crazychessplaya

May I have your attention for a second? Good.

The OP never once said a word about trolls. If you take a moment to read his post, you will find out that he complained about a) COST b) CONNECTIVITY and c) RUDE PEOPLE (i.e. those who curse). Not once did he complain about trolls.

It is only after the mod's comment that the thread focused on trolls. And why am I complaining? Well, because nothing was said to address the three issues, namely the cost, the connectivity and the rude people.

1) I did address the costs. I found it hard to believe that a full time student doesn't have $29 a year for a gold membership. I don't know what university costs in Poland or Germany but here in the US, it costs about 500 to 1000 times $29.

2) We can't help him with his connectivity. He says he has a good connection. Who knows? Most people seems to connect here without a problem but you do get a couple of people coming to the forum every day to complain. If chess.com handles more than 10,000 live users at a time and one or two (or even 20 times that number) report problems every day, where is it most likely that the problems reside? If he doesn't understand how lag can exist even when the connection appears good and doesn't agree with the system of lag adjustments, what can we do?

3) His description of rude people, "people here seem to actually from their nature on be very very rude". If that's not complaining about trollish behavior, then I guess I don't know how you are defining trolls. At any rate, I did suggest that reporting such behavior does work and suggested that he do it.

The cost isn't too high, the connection has nothing to do with the site, and there are very few rude people. All issues addressed.

Notmtwain beat me to it.

Ella-Bonjela

if chess.com can get beyond the "docker" stage, I might pay for membership.

RedSoxpawn

I once had a membership, similarly I am a student, and I found the features not be be either A) useful, B) functional, or C) I didn't use them. So I cancelled the membership. Problem solved no more wasted money.

Connectivity, you must be in live chess; I hardly use it so I have nothing to comment on it, but I do not enjoy it much, however I have never had a connectivity problem.

Rude people. Just report them or block them. I have a pretty thick skin and in the amount of time I have been here I have never blocked anybody for things they have said. Personally I find it childish to get worked up over what somebody say's in a post or a message, this is the internet after all. With that said, you admit to having a fairly bad temper yourself, if you can't go back and forth with somebody else than you shouldn't respond to start with.

So to conclude and highlight the solutions to the matters that I know a bit about, first stop spending the money on the features if you can't afford them and don't like the way they operate. And second, ignore, block, or report those you do not agree with.

WHy do whinners have to post about how they are going to leave because of blah blah blah?

Why don't they ever just leave quietly?

Ella-Bonjela

Thanks..

Checking wubberz profile, he is playing mostly blitz games;

Reading his post, he is complaining that players don't talk;

Who talks in 3 min game? And then he runs out of time and blames chess.com...

Sure, site is full of rude people, check any other games site on the net, they are everywhere. At least here they can be blocked.

No prob.

Next time:

1. goto http://www.onlinehtmleditor.net/

2. Paste the code you got from Youtube into the top section. It should be highlighted in blue.

3. Copy what appears in the bottom.

4. Paste into your Chess.com reply window.

5. Sit back and wait for the profits to roll in.

Ella-Bonjela

blitz conversations maybe go like ... gg and stfu etc.

sftac

Why pay if the price is not affordable?  Why whine about cost if you've chosen to pay for something you cannot readily afford?

The site has plenty to offer those who are unable to pay.  As for rude players:  block 'em & forget 'em (really, they're not worth your time fussing over).  If they're being more than just rude, report 'em.

sftac

ps.  Can't speak to the connection issue, that could be the ISP / router / WiFi / auto-updates swamping a connection, an outdated browser, a PC that's not been booted for weeks or some other issue.

chess.com wont mourn your leaving...it is too big to give a damn

MuhammadAreez10

See? The OP lacks logic.
