"Good citizen badge" to help make chess.com a friendlier place

Too often, I play against an angry opponent who will throw insults at me, totally out of the blue. This lead me to disable chat in blitz games, but I find it's not a satisfactory answer to the problem. I think this gives too much power to the trolls, sadly. I like to say "good move" once in while, and "good game" after all my games. But I've had it with the verbal abuse. Yes, reporting is a nice (and necessary) feature, but it's still not strong enough of a deterrent, obviously.

So I've been thinking about a solution... What if players had a "good citizen badge", an indicator that would be turned on under certain conditions? This way, instead of turning off chat for all users, we could leave it on for the "good citizens".

Conditions for having that "badge" could be:

  • never has been reported for abuse (discarding reports without good cause)
  • has been a member for a certain period of time (tbd)
  • has friended people
  • has received awards from other players
  • paying membership could also factor in

I rarely see those kind of players. I assume they should be randomly distributed through the range of players.

Perhaps it reflects the fact that your 1185 blitz rating is just below the 1200 level most people start off at, so you get to play against all the new players who are in a bad move after losing their first games.

Maybe they should give you a badge for playing against some number of new players.

Maybe the title of Ambassador once you play a couple of hundred new players.
