Yes, I know. It was not aimed entirely at you, more of a general comment.

I was reading your thread as I was thinking about the amount of complaining.

Also I  wondered how many people would complain about me complaining about the amount of complaining on here....  Smile

nikre

ok, thanks for understanding Smile

I say just give all the openings that have an ECO code.

Seems a happy middle-ground.

I just uploaded a zip file containing them all, there are 2015, as opposed to the 3000+ chess.com had been using (and still does, for vote chess for instance)

http://www.chess.com/download/view/eco-openings

wow, good work. can it be uploaded to a game as a starting position?

I don't think so, unless they allow custom positions.  Plus now somebody posted a note to my wall saying the download doesn't work which is odd, I just uploaded it.

Actually now I've downloaded it as well, plus unzipped it successfully on Windows.  I generated this on a Windows box -- it may not open on Linux or Mac.  I would have uploaded a plain text file but the instructions said it needed to be compressed.

I can however upload it to one of my web servers -- give me a few minutes.

For what it's worth, the original link and file work just fine for me on my Mac.

Well the other missing openings can wait but this thread is about the Scotch Gambit and I hope it can be promptly restored. That surely cannot give rise to programming challenges.

3000 ECO, Kohai?

How about just the 500 actual main ECO codes? Or how about a reduced default and then a button saying "Advanced" or somesuch to give a wider selection?

The 3000 ECO would still be on the chess.com database (unless you're thinking it was just hefty to look at).

yes, it would be even greater if the starting positions can be manually set.

Good idea!

NimzoRoy

This link (below) is very closely related to this topic and there's a lot of discussion on it, in case the staff wants more evidence that removing all old choices was a very bad move on their part.

Actually they don't need a bigger list IF we can have the option to set up custom-made (ie "do-it-yourself") thematic tnmts.

I'll join the protest because it is a worthy cause. Cool

Its being discussed at the moment. Having 3000 ECO loading is a little hefty so we're looking at the best way to add these back for you.

@kohai make use of FEN notation so anybody can start a tournament from any position

There's an issue with that:

Eco codes are almost always equal/balanced, and it's not a problem playing rated games from thematic openings.

Random FEN codes can be lost for one side. I'd like to be able to play from any FEN too, but these will have to be unrated.

I would like to add my name.

1. Please restore all the old starting positions. Many of the positions for previous tournaments in which I have played are no longer available.

2. Please allow custom start positions. This would satisy all desires to explore ALL opening variations. It would also allow me to run endgame tournaments which lots of people want.

This issue is self correcting, as previously stated by somebody in that forum link that NimzoRoy posted.
