p.s. Kohai, I know that you're a member and not just a staff. But you should realise as the word "staff" is always there when you post everything you say will be magnified.  You are, like it or not, chess.com police.  If a cop tells you something it is taken very seriously.  If you want to make comments as just "joe person", then you should change your login or make a point that what you're saying is NOT coming from or related to your power position of being a staff...

Good point and noted.

Its one thing to respect ones privacy especially in todays world of indentity theft.  But to want to be private so your boss, spouse, parents dont find out is rediculous.  If you have an addiction then get help, dont justify hiding it.

I agree with this sentiment 100% , if you are "sneaking around" hiding things from your boss, wife, parents then you have a problem. The fact that you want to hide something from any of these is a confession that you know you are in the wrong.... now you want/demand chess.com help you in your deception ?  hhmmmmmmm

It is irrelevant whether or not people view it as wrong, what matters is how many people want chess.com to aid them in their matters of privacy, as I do not believe deception pertains to all who wish to hide such things from their affiliates.

The customer is not always right. What a few people would like from a service/supply organisation - and what those service/supply organisations are prepared to provide - are not usually exactly the same.

If the suppliers to chess.com demand an uncomplicated and widespread privacy feature I am sure the service would be more than willing to adhere.

Respecting privacy concerns would probably be a good business decision for the site. I can easily imagine players who, for one reason another, develop uncomfortable relationships with other players and choose to leave because they don't want to "run in" to anyone.

One's " right to privacy "  is not the same in all settings and with all people. For example, a minor child living at home doesnt have the same rights to privacy from their parents as an adult has .

Indubitably, however, the mere possibility of minors undertaking deceptive enterprises against their affiliates is not the concern of the syndicate, as has been noted, they have a site specifically for children pertaining to a sensitive age.

HeartOfStone

Some are questioning the reasons behind the need of privacy, saying somehow that one does not deserve privacy unless he/she can come up with a morally good reason for it. Instead, one should fix his/her own issues so that privacy is not needed.

But this is not the concern of the staff. The site should ask for your permission before displaying your online status, just like virtually all other online services do.
