Chess websites do not need new features.... unless they are not about chess and are really about something else.

Quite correct, which is where the problem lies.

Lots of satisfied customers just getting on and playing chess have had their routines disrupted by change for ? sake.

See my comment #42.  They've spent a lot of money on v3, and you can be sure they didn't do that for fun.  v2 was simply not maintainable in the long run.

For example, Flash is an obsolete technology that is notoriously full of bugs and security holes; if your site uses Flash (as v2 does), what do you do when web browsers cut off support for Flash?  The website that you kept as-is because it was "still working" will then be broken, even without you changing anything.

Now, if you want to argue that v3 is poorly designed or whatever, you can do that (although constructive criticism that explains what can be improved is rather more useful than "it's bad"), but sticking with v2 was simply not an option if they wanted the site to survive for more than a few years.

Spent a lot of money from ad revenue and membership dues for staff salary...overtimes and promotions on upgrading the technology and new design of V2 that the majority of members do not like for close to 3 years now?...They would be disgruntled if it was volunteered work...however a guaranteed paycheck would not matter if the new V3 was created for fun or not as you referred to...Mistakes made in the tech world such as V3 are hard to admit and demotions are unheard of but continual keeping the old...outdated...eventual broken V2 running continues to be a huge success compared to the other inferior chess sites on the internet...I am not tech saavy with terms as flash,codes,margins,etc...that needs to be modernized but when ChessKids branched off there were no problems with V2 and everybody was happy...

@Stephenson2, Flash is only one specific example.  And even if it was, it's not always that simple.  I'm a software developer; sometimes your old code gets so convoluted as you fix bugs and add features that nobody dares to work in it any more and it just needs re-written from scratch.

@frankooo, much of the money that was spent on v3 could have been spent on other things or would have just been pure profit if they didn't think v3 was necessary.  If you want to argue that v3 was poorly designed or poorly implemented, go ahead, but chess.com management was so convinced that v2 needed to be replaced that they were prepared to sink a lot of money into it.

mcris

I'm on V2 with Chromium on Linux. My only plugin is PDF viewer. So no Flash and working!

GM_chess_player

I don't like the 1st version because it's board is small.

GM_chess_player

It doesn't have features!

ChessOfPlayer

I used hate the idea of V3.  I was too used to V2 and hated the idea of this change.  I still prefer V2 for certain things.  Still feel like things are not the same.  But that's just holding on the the past...  Using V3 as much as possible and almost favour the just the same.

MGleason

Have you tried http://www.chess.com/classic?  This will change your theme and some of your other settings to maintain more of the look and feel of v2, while still keeping the underlying technology of v3.

Inside Live Chess in V2, there is a icon for "Games," which lists all the current games (and time controls) underway.

You pick out, (say) two 2400 strength players at Game in 3/0, AND YOU WATCH THEIR GAME.  Very simple.  You learn a lot, quickly.

But damn -- I can't find this option on V3.  Despite all its other bells and whistles.  I still can't find it in V3.  PLEASE INFORM.

At least the site is still free.  Laughing

In Live Chess, V2, there was a list of ongoing games.  Example, Game in 3/0 by IMs and NMs, and sometimes GMs.

Where is this list in V3 ??

Simple question.  But no simple answer has been forthcoming to date ??

I asked this question (in various threads and fora on the site), at least a week ago.

When you click on the binoculars button (in the screen in the lower right-hand corner), it shows all active games.  Click on one to watch it.

Thank you.  Much appreciated.

Another question -- how do you get the "sound ON" when someone makes a move in Live Chess, either when you're playing, or when you're watching a game?

I hate sounds in Live so I have them off, so I don't know if it works for both your own and watched games but when in Live, either click the Settings option in the menu or the settings option next to the board when moving the cursor over the upper-right near the resize:

Toggle Board > Sounds to On if they are off, like mine:

With "sounds" ON, it still doesn't work for watching games, unfortunately.

Perhaps I'm doing something wrong, but I tried going into settings from both places you mentioned above.

All I need now is sound in V3 and the universe will come together.

Hope springs eternal.  Smile

Sound working now, Feb. 25th.  Thank you.

With the V3 version there will be less cheaters, because the FEN-Code is no longer present!

Anyway, I think so!

Rockerbob_inactive

Will probably leave if we get stuck with v3.

I am currently using the old Chess version (V2). Therefore, the background images on V3 look bad. I wonder why the background images on V3 can not be tiled!!!

See my theme in the old version (V2)!
