Rava I have already explained this is not a discussion about internet issues (which computers and servers can detect automatically) so try to understand the point I'm discussing. I want to play live games and your solution unfortunately it's not mine and I want to have the free to do it in a safe and regualamentated enviroment. Thank you

"I have to wait 10 minutes.  Ten precious minutes!  Six HUNDRED seconds of my incredibly important and extremely busy life because of these horrible people who annoy me, but who don't actually break any of the rules.  Please punish and or ban them!  THIS IS VERY VERY IMPORTANT!!!"

On other important news, I have a splinter in my right index finger.  It's very irritating.

Oh, I understand the point you are making. And no they cannot always detect when it is a disconnect.

And how does your solution provide a "safe" environment?

satorichess

I'm not talking about disconnections either (wich is detected anyhow) pls read the previous post. Thanks

Again, disconnects are not always detected.

I do this for a living, it cannot always be detected.

So your solution could penalize people for no reason.

You are whining and being unresonable.

Rsava can you proove it to me? What does it means that a disconnection can't not be detected by a computer? Proove it. I don't belive this just because you (with all respect, but I don't know who you are)  are saying it.

This is so funny because whenever there are posts like this regarding "online" chess (the 3 day move variety), most people are on the other side of the issue and want to ban people who run down the "clock" or use vacation time....

...which I think is ridiculous. In online chess I do not care how long they take to make their moves or how much vacation they use because it is wasting exactly zero seconds of my life. They have to move eventually, and when they do, then their game will pop up on my screen when its my turn to make a move.

But in this thread, again I find myself at odds with everyone, because unlike online chess, here when someone is being a jerk and letting their clocks run out in a lost position it DOES suck up my time, because I have to sit there and babysit the position on the off chance they might actually move again.

It is very prevalent and annoying.

However, I do have some advice for the OP that has helped me deal with it psychologically.

When it is obvious someone is doing this (like its less than one minute in on move 12 of a 10 minute game, and you have just made a crushing move, and your opponent has sat there for 5 minutes not moving), then I start chatting (I normally never chat):

"Its like a nightmare, isn't it?"

"Umadbro?"

"Your position keeps getting worse and worse, doesnt it?"

"Did you really think someone like you had a chance against me?"

...and just keep making stuff up to pass the time. Of course, they probably arent even watching the screen, they are probably outside kicking their dog or something, whatever these people do when they are losing and too imature to deal with it, I don't know. But it gives me a little satisfaction and helps the 10 minutes seem shorter...sometimes I am even racing to get my last few digs in before the clock runs out, so it works for me.

Why don't you just start another game? Premium members can do that, can't they?

I disagree with this completely as well. If you're playing a 15/10 game then you should understand that your opponent is completely able to burn all 15 of those minutes as soon as he wants to. If you don't like this then play with shorter time constraints. Plus, even if they do start burning the clock they're obviously just putting themselves at a disadvantage, therefore making it even easier for you to get the win.

If you start making all these ridiculous rules, no ones going to want to play.

If you don't like the amount of time your opponent has to play, then change it. You are fully able to select how much time they start with.

The problem with online chess is different. In live chess, you must stay and watch the pieces get covered with spider webs in the case the guy suddenly comes back to life in the last 10 min. In online, you don't have to watch the paint dry but you might need months to checkmate, during which you might have unexpectedly long vacation / no internet access / whatever which timeouts you.

Now of course, in both cases it is your fault for having agreed to a time control you wouldn't like. The opponent is acting like a jerk, but he could also have been tougher than expected hence inducing a longer game and he will be using all his time for legitimate reasons.

Don't worry; I have faith in the staff & admin of chess.com.  I happen to know as fact that these hard working people will be implementing major changes for 2014 such as;  All users will have to wear a sign around their necks saying, I'm a moron; I'm a cheater, I'm a troll, when they sign in which will be confirmed with finger print, and retinol scan!
