Course not oinquarki, it cannot be done, but it is worth discussion isn't it?!

Of course; just I got a little startled when you began to discuss practicality.

well it could happen Smile..... but you got nothing to hide nor to be afraid of anything ?

Well if people were identifiable here, there would be a lot less trolling.  It wouldn't stamp it out entirely... as you said, some people are just jerks IRL so they will still be jerks, but those that troll and behave badly while hiding (the cowards) would think twice if they could be identified.

the ironic thing is, i tone myself so far down on the internet it almost hurts sometimes.  i am way more of a jerk in real life than i am here, becuase in real life i hang out with people that understand sarcasm and appreciate it.  on here i type a lot of comments and then run it through a little calculation to see if it is funny enough to get all the judgements.

of course, i am not saying most of the interworld works like this, but i still find it funny.

true, that's why we really need that 'sarcasm' emoticon.

i have plenty to hide, though.  i like hiding.  if i didn't want to hide i would leave the house and talk to real people.  wait, back to square one.

kco

you are a fugitive ? Surprised

Yeah, with all the users who would actively try to dodge identification, it would be totally impracticable.

But I think there would be a real benefit to it if it could be done.

Imagine if that troll giving you grief could be identified and you found they live a few kilometers away.  You could pay them a visit!

A new age of "forum rage" would happen... people getting violent over some remarks made in a a forum...

News Headline: Forum Wars.  A teenager was beaten with a stick over a comment made on chess.com yesterday.  Sources say the comment ("flaming tool") sparked rage in the 19 year old who was the target of the comment.  Unable to control himself...... etc.

lol

if anyone is really that offensive you could call /b/ and get more than you could from a credit card.  just tell them that user/chess.comtroll was eating kittens or something and that should take care of it.

Yes, it's a nice hint there are real human beings at the other side of the screen and we'd be better to behave like it.

I approve this message.

Also, I like to refer to peoples real names.

In summary; all men over 18 should be required to provide proof of identity so that we know they're human beings and that they think twice.

In anycase, identification will be here within a few years. We're already beginning to see it with networks of logins that can be used on multiple sites. Sooner or later this will get attached to the real world. Give it time....

MsJean

Right now people have a choice and do what is comfortable for them. I like that but I am concerned about the safety of the children on our site.

I am playing with the cutest 11 year old right now. What a great kid ! In our chat I was asked for my name and I responded whats yours? Then I thought again and said the name was not necessary !

I was really concerned when I was told the name. It was only the first name, but I wondered about the safety of the disclosure. When I asked the reason for the insight, the response was. "I know you will not hurt me"

YIKES!!!!  that worried me even more . What do you all think ? Is there enough safety for the kids on the site? If you cant prove you are an adult maybe you need to be required to use a handle. Well adults could hide behind a handle too.

Elona

It would be a nice feature to manage who can see what. So, only friends can view your profile and content. However, without these options its a simple case of not posting what you want others to see.

Having said that, it is important for people to know that there are ALOT of weirdos around on the web.

As for user names, is there a way to change them?

My best friend on here has a stupid user name, it bugs me and I want it to change.

MsJean

Elona thats a good idea. There is an option to block photos unless you are a friend ill bet the site has a capability.

kids still pick friends....Its a worry

ivandh

I say we shove all the kids off to chesskid.com and allow depravity to ensue.

MsJean

HMMMM ?????? Theres one solution lol
