Auto-enrolling chess.com Tournaments

Hi - I have a minor complaint about online tournaments. I've been enrolled in a tournament automatically that I did not want to enter (and cannot escape from).

I'm a new player getting used to chess.com, and I recently enrolled for my first chess.com tournament (for players rated 1401-1600). On Feb 28th 2013, the day before the tournament was to start, I won a one-off online game (by resignation) and my rating was pushed to just over 1600. I was apparently auto-enrolled in another chess.com tournament, for players rated 1601-1800.

Now I understand completely if the TD wanted to keep me out of the 1401-1600 tourney. What annoys me is that I was entered, without my knowledge or consent, in the higher-ranked one. If the decision had been up mine, I almost certainly wouldn't have enrolled. When I realized that I had been entered, I contacted chess.com and they refused to let me out (except by forfeiting all my games).

Now obviously I want to be a good sport and play the games out, and of course the players in the tournament have nothing to do with this, but I still feel annoyed at chess.com. I think that this policy is coercive and unfair. If I had been given a "you've been moved up to a different tournament - please withdraw or accept reassignment" email, I might feel differently.

Not the greatest problem of all time, but I still feel annoyed that chess.com is making decisions for me that I wouldn't make.

Well, this is listed on the Tournament page:

NOTE: If you register now and your rating changes before the start date, you will be AUTOMATICALLY moved to the correct group when the tournament starts.

I can understand the issue, but it does state that on the page.

That's true, but it also doesn't say when 12.01am March 1st is. Whose time zone are we talking about here?

whirlwind2011

I believe the time zone is US Pacific Time.

Thanks for the tip.

Still waiting on chess.com's response. If customer service lets me down, I'll cancel my upcoming renewal. It's too bad - a lot of the site is great, its just the little things like this that turn me off.

@OP: I'm not clear on how Chess.com let you down.

As given by Rsava, the statement on the tournament acceptance page is sufficient notice of bracket reassignment in the event of a rating increase/decrease. By accepting entry into the tournament, you acknowledged your awareness and consent of this provision.

This really is a little thing.

I've been here for years, and spend much time on the forums, and this is the 1st complaint I see about this.

Anyway, there's a much more serious issue with the official tournaments.

By the time that original 1400-1600 tourney ends, the players in the final rounds will all be 1900 plus. If you are a 'real' 1590, you should theoretically be a favourite, but in truth you have no more chance than in the 1600-1800 tourney. Now there's something to complain about....

@whirlwind:

I don't like the auto-reassignment idea. I think that some kind of confirmation should be necessary for a TD to infer consent. I'm not going to enter a chess.com tournament from now on - if others are fine implicitly agreeing to whatever sneaky fine print clauses are in there, then fine, but I'm not.

Edit: I looked and the tournament actually started at 2.04pm (PST?)

"Started on March 1, 2013 2:04 PM"

Since it doesn't actually say when the tournament will start, I think it is doubly ridiculous that they auto-enroll you according to a rating that can change anywhere in this window.

@rooperi

Absolutely, this is a little thing, and what you're describing also bothers me. However, I'm also unhappy with the way chess.com has handled this (and a previous complaint I had last year - I was briefly banned from live chess because someone's name was similar to mine. Getting them to help me out was next to impossible). Poor CS all around.

I will probably withdraw, accept the loss of 60-70 points, and think long and hard about renewing my membership here.

Other people unsatisfied with chess.com? Note that I've never had any problems with my playchess.com account.
