Well, this is listed on the Tournament page:
NOTE: If you register now and your rating changes before the start date, you will be AUTOMATICALLY moved to the correct group when the tournament starts.
I can understand the issue, but it does state that on the page.
Hi - I have a minor complaint about online tournaments. I've been enrolled in a tournament automatically that I did not want to enter (and cannot escape from).
I'm a new player getting used to chess.com, and I recently enrolled for my first chess.com tournament (for players rated 1401-1600). On Feb 28th 2013, the day before the tournament was to start, I won a one-off online game (by resignation) and my rating was pushed to just over 1600. I was apparently auto-enrolled in another chess.com tournament, for players rated 1601-1800.
Now I understand completely if the TD wanted to keep me out of the 1401-1600 tourney. What annoys me is that I was entered, without my knowledge or consent, in the higher-ranked one. If the decision had been up mine, I almost certainly wouldn't have enrolled. When I realized that I had been entered, I contacted chess.com and they refused to let me out (except by forfeiting all my games).
Now obviously I want to be a good sport and play the games out, and of course the players in the tournament have nothing to do with this, but I still feel annoyed at chess.com. I think that this policy is coercive and unfair. If I had been given a "you've been moved up to a different tournament - please withdraw or accept reassignment" email, I might feel differently.
Not the greatest problem of all time, but I still feel annoyed that chess.com is making decisions for me that I wouldn't make.
