Random opening tournament

It would be cool if it would be possible to have a random opening position tournament or play random opening games. In this a random position is chosen from the list with openings by the computer before the game starts and the player have to play it.

+ point of such a game is that people cant just play their favourite opening and have to extend their opening knowledge.

Adding this feature too chess.com shouldnt be difficult. Anyone else think this would be cool?

The idea is fine, except for a couple problems. Some of the positions in the database are completely winning for one side. (I don't know why they don't just remove the openings from the list!)

In a tournament that could partly be solved by forcing that the players both play the opening from both sides. So a random opening is only chosen per player couple.

However it can never be totally fair, but the fun and learning experience is in this case more important in my opinion.

That's fine, except in some pairings you're forcing a stronger player to lose to a much weaker one. (Even if they win the second game, their rating takes a hit through no fault of their own.)

Then they should eleminate those openings from the random list.

Kinda weird that there are openings which are completely winning from one side. In that case someone could only make challenges with that opening and artificially increase his rating.

Indeed they can, and it has been done by certain unscrupulous peoples. Here is one example: http://www.chess.com/opening/eco/C37_Kings_Gambit_Accepted_Double_Muzio_Gambit

My experience has shown that every booked opening is a work in progress. Thus, there are no clearly winning "openings" in chess. WE ARE FREE!!!!!!!!!!!!!Laughing

And don't forget about the infamous Caro-Kann Defense--Accelerated Panov Attack, Pseudo-Scandanavian!

Make theme games unrated?

Sure, except NOW many fewer players will want to participate.

Theoretically, though, you could still have the computer only select ones with an even position.
