12 yo beginner game against engine

I taught my little cousing how to play chess. He's a very smart kid, a bit weird, but he shows potential in anything he does. I started teaching him about 4 months ago and he improves incredibly fast.

I'm not the worst player, but I have a hard time losing, especially against someone inferior to me. :P So I was winning games and after each one I showed him possible bad moves, mistakes etc. However, I felt like I might be restricting his play. So he played against the computer (I know, not the best enemy, but there aren't many clubs for small kids in his vicinity). I can't find him other good enemies since no one in our family either has time or likes chess.

Anyways, here's the game, I gave him basic ideas about this opening after I saw computer play Sicilian and though it will be a good idea to check his tactical thinking. It turned out better than I expected! Also, I may have helped him with a couple moves in the endgame, he still haven't had practice with it. :P

What do you think about his potential?

I analyzed it with computer for myself to see if I'm missing something, I hope you have no problem with it. (it's a bother to remove those variations one by one)

You should teach him about castling, developing his minor pieces before his Queen, and more basic stuff.  He plays pretty good.

Make this boy the next Magnus!

How well does he wear clothes?

What do you mean?

To others: I think he plays amazingly well. Does every kid improve so fast?

@vanelau: he's white!

AndyClifton

Magnus is a model.

Scottrf

Impressive!

And if he was black or asian? What are you trying to say Cnacnel?

.

I didn't mean to say anything! I just gave my honest opinion on what the kid needed to work on, and I thought he played pretty well for a beginner. I never made any racist comments! Are you just assuming all this cuz I'm Asian?

@vanelau, he did castle and develop his other pieces before his queen, he played as white in this game and the computer played as black, and didn't do these things, so he was telling you which side his cousin was playing as, not his race.

Aha!  A counter-accusation!

LordHarnois

I propose we get an army of bright younglings whether they be black asian white blue red whatever, and form the future Magnus group and as their mentors collect all prize money.

Looks like a plan.

@cheetahch: he still needs some time to crush me :)

I think he plays really well.... And I think everyone who plays chess is a little weird....some are just downright nuts. When he starts chatting to his invisible friend Thomas....then you have issues..

My cousin visited me today and I set him up a chesskid.com account.

I realized from his game with computer that he doesn't see basic tactical ideas because he's too tightly focused on developing (I taught him that he should develop all his pieces before having any tactical ideas, looks like it backfired a bit).

Next game against some kid (or a parent) proved it (although he played brilliantly) and I told him to forget what I said for the next game and focus on tactics. And he made it! His opponent is very bad but a tactical idea from move 7 proved that his potential is immense!
