I like to show a game of mine to demostrate the attacking possibilities that arise from Smith's Morra's Gambit, Danish Variation.

great variation.

Cool

I don't understand why black kept pushing pawns (after move 5) inspite of being so much behind in development. Move 5 was probably a mistake too because the white bishop doesn't have good developing squares. Better was e6.

With d6 and e6 black wanted to create the small center with e6-d6 formation to stay solid, and that strategy wasn't bad. Unfortunately when he moved the Queen away from the kingside missing the tactics on f7 and e6 that cost the game.

I think it's more demanding to go this way. Very defencive play is for strong masters. It's more straightforward to hold the position by creating some counter-threats and piece-activity.

Then he shouldnt be accepted the gambit in the first place.! when you accept a gambit, you have to play defencively and try to hold the material advantage to win in the endgame.

This is stereotypical thinking. If you can gain space and good squares for your pieces in a gambit why not do it? Not all gambits are sound after all and if your opponent makes mistakes in a gambit you'd better be ready to take advantage of them!

sncorfu

Most Danish Gambit games tend to have the result of this game, and also tend to be miniatures.
Menacing bishops pointed right at the castled king and a huge lead in development is more than a small price to pay for two pawns, which white most likely will regain - with a better position.
Greedy is not enough to describe black in the Danish Gambit.
Keeping it to the Smith-Morra would have been much better.
There hasn't been a 2000+ rated game in the databases since 2004 with full acceptance of the gambit. I guess that gives concrete evidence on what black should and shouldn't do.

Almost every opening is defendable with perfect play (see wiki: perfect play, game theory).
Chess is a game of mistakes. The point is that finding the defenses 1. against an experienced player or at least a player that has studied this particular opening, and 2. in timed matches, well it is very hard.
For bullet-blitz it's certain loss, the tactics are crazy. For 90/30, maybe.
To put it simply, on move 5, most people would pick white anyday and twice on Sunday. Hands down.

Well sncorfu is right, time and psycology plays a huge part on defending accuratelly. Black made only one mistake 14...Qa5? missing Nxf7 after which e6 is undefended to the B and the Q.

Nb8 obstruct the defence on the back rank so Rxf7 doesnt work.

Robert_New_Alekhine

Nice game.

Is there a mistake in this statement ?

This position analysed for ages. Black lacks development so he is forced to play defensive for the entire game. But with accurate play can balance the game.

This opening is extensively analysed as far as I know, Black is lacking in development and is forced to defend (if not for the entire game, but sure must withstand some attacking lines) and by playing correctly he can depend on the material advantage to turn the game around.

Maybe it is unsound against a really strong opponent but its certainly playable.

Forgive me, my English are not perfect.
