Does chess help you in your daily life?

Hi all,

I just started to throw myself more deeply into the world of chess and I find that it has sharpened my stategical thinking outside of chess. For example future planning, business decisions and just general efficient use of all types of resources. This to me is amazing, not only is the game fun but it also improves your life in a way.

So my question is has chess helped you outside of chess?

Hi!

Yes, it does help. But i think it is on subconcious level, so that i cannot see direct improvements for my life. But it is just fun.

Proffesional players would see their money needs satisfied by playing chess, but for the majority it must be something like a place to refresh and get new strenghth.

I play chess since i was a small boy. I played with my grandfather who was a missionairy. When he retired from journeying, chess was one of his preferable enjoys, i think. Chess creates history and makes your life richer. You will always remind your best game or your greatest loss when you are in trouble, isn't it ?

As someone who competed throughout middle and high school, I attribute a level of maturity through my chess-playing, as I single-handedly brought myself to a good chess player from scratch.  It adds a lot of perspective, when you compare a man-made "game" to the complexeties of life; sorry I'm a philosophy grad!  :)

Chess has isolated me from reality and caused me to shrink into a shadow of my former self.

I'm kidding :) Chess has helped me think more about consequences and strategy. But more importantly it has provided me with hours and hours and hours of enjoyment. It is the greatest hobby one can have!

Frankly, it is hard to ascertain what part of my life was helped by chess and chess alone. Many of the aspects of chess can also be found in pilot training which I underwent---good planning, caution, emotional stability, forecasting, circumspection, focus, situational awareness and so on. The same lessons related to good judgment I also learned through cycling as one learns to pace himself and recognize his limitations. So, for me, I must say that chess is not so unique a font of these good traits. If you are active and compete, you will learn the same things from other sports or endeavours.

In chess instruction, one often sees the advice to examine one's mistakes. I think that that advice should be seen more often in many other areas involving learning.
