take-back request

Mouse slips are part of online chess. Like Finger Fehlers in OTB. Live with them, if necessary, resign the game, play another. The take back request shifts responsibility for your error to your opponent. (Dealing with a request can also be a pain in short time conditions.)
And yeah, I hate it too.

I think a takeback button should be available and optional. I don't mind a takeback button like they have at FICS. I have had weaker opponents make a horrible blunder and wanted a takeback. I don't mind a weaker player using a takeback if they really want to use it (just don't abuse it). I have never used it and would not use it, but allow my opponents to use if if they spot a horrible move they just played. I just read recently that many grandmasters use takebacks all the time when training against a computer. GM Joel Benjamin described using takebacks when he helped program Deep Blue. He would use takebacks until he found a drawing or winning line against the computer. I guess it would be up to the players, especially the higher rated player to allow takeback, or just refuse. Online chess is more susceptible to mouse errors or quicker play with mistakes than OTB, which is governed by the touch move rule.

I believe that takebacks should not be an option, just as in OTB.
However, it might be helpful if the staff arranged a "Submit" button as there is in online chess. This would give the player a chance to examine his move and correct "finger slips" prior to making his move official.

I too use takeback all the time when doing analysis with a computer. I even use it when doing analysis on a board. Analysis is not a game.

I've seen a couple of people I've played against have mouse slips, and if they tell me that's the case, I'll often agree to make an arbitrary move such as sliding my queen over one square so that they can move the mismoved piece back to its starting point and I can return the queen. Then the game proceeds as if the misclick had never occured. Of course, this wouldn't really work in blitz or short chess since there isn't time to discuss the idea, and you certainly run the risk of the opponent being a jerk and taking advantage of your arbitrary move or something. It's not really a good fix, but until a takeback button exists it may be your best chance. You just have to type fast enough :)
Really though I can see no harm in a takeback button since it could be declined or ignored completely.
