Chess Changes???

Hi What's going on in the chess stats section? Things seem to be changing/disappearing? Average opponent, average win/lose/draw. These are brilliant gauges? What's happened?

malcolmparfitt

I was just looking for those. Really useful stats vanished without warning. Anyone know when they went? Are they still available to other levels of membership?

It's one of the reasons for upgrading my membership. I can/could view my opponents details.

I would like it a staff member could comment? I love this site, there are no others that come close. Over the 2 years that I have used it several things from the stats page has dissapeared. The latest is hard to take! It was the first thing I said to my partner this morning!

Sort of thing that might be requested by people who build up their rating by beating lots of lower-rated opponents. Personally, I'd rather have the more accurate information, both for my opponents and for myself

WendigoWind

I agree with the sentiments expressed above, and will throw in this thought: if I am playing someone in a tournament, and they are rated, say, 1150, I am going to think that I may have an easy win. But what if that person has only been playing 1800 or better? Now, without an Average Opponent, it would take going back through that person's games to know their true strength.

I'm new so I didn't see previous changes, I'm not a big stats fan but it was useful to see average opponent rating - certainly more important than best win which can be very random.

malcolmparfitt

Not sure what time staff come online. I would hope someone would then have the good manners to explain the rationale behind making this change without notice.

TheOldReb

Which stats have been lost ?  The only one I notice is average opponent.  Are there others ?

I totally agree with you. Since I have been on this site about 7 bad changes have been made, and 0 good ones. Unless something is changed drastically, I will not be keeping my diamond membership and commitment to this bad site for much longer.

bad site? Mouseman, come on.. you dont mean that. One of the reasons why my middle school chess team are 2x defending county champions is that I have them play here (the other 23 middle schools...dont) along with OTB. Its not a bad site. Is there room for some constructive criticism... yes.

Bring back the stats.... including:

As our site continues to grow, the database grows and grows, and the queries for those stats have gotten more and more expensive. Those kinds of queries were what were causing all of the recent site problems. We have temporarily removed them while we architect new solutions for them. Sorry to disappoint - we just need some time to fix it. Having the site be stable is the top priority.

... and that answers that...:)

You were querying the average opponent rating every time the online chess and stats page was loaded? I just assumed you kept track of the average and number of opponents in either a player statistics table or in the user table. Would only have to be updated after each game and would just be a simple math problem and small table update. Wouldn't seem like that querying an additional field and a query to update after each finished game would put too much a load on the servers since many of the tables are being updated anyway.

Whatever happened to average moves per game,I await the reinstatement along with these more recent stat removals.

bayview

Average moves per game, another forgotten removed stat.

Consultation or at least an advisory prior to action would hv been appreciated.

Unless chess.com balance the [temporary?] removal of feature by adding ones that even more people like even more.

bayview

Temporary as in av moves per game being removed this may seem trivial but some of us like stats and miss the ones already removed.

it's not a matter or more servers. it's a matter of re-architecting the DB. we do need to add a column to the user table - it just hasn't been done.

InertTachyon

I miss all of these things - at 4000 plus games it is daunting, but I will probably download and calculate all of these stats so I can at least keep track for myself. (before our game archives disappear as well).  I hope you can find a way to give these things back to us, they have been part of what makes this site special!
