The third season of the Tech Mahindra Global Chess League is set to start on December 14. Chess titans like World Champion Gukesh Dommaraju, GMs Hikaru Nakamura, Alireza Firouzja, and Hou Yifan are just some of the stars playing in the event, which features many of the strongest and most talented players in the world. With the drama of a rapid time control and a million-dollar prize fund, this is one event you don't want to miss.

Here's what you need to know to enjoy the event:

The Teams And Players

As in previous seasons, six teams will compete in the main event. Players from all over the world will converge in India to represent their teams.

Each team consists of an Icon, the highest-rated player of the team, playing on board one, along with two men, two women, and a junior.

In each matchup of the Preliminary Stage, players' results on each board add points to their teams, as follows:

  • 4 game points for winning with Black
  • 3 game points for winning with White
  • 1 game point for a draw

The cumulative points of the players determine the winner of the match. Teams then earn points as follows:

  • 3 match points for winning a match
  • 1 match point for drawing a match

At the end of the Preliminary Stage, the top two teams move on to the Final, a best-of-two match. The winner of the Final is the team with the most match points at the end of the match.
