The Tech Mahindra Global Chess League consists of a Preliminary Stage followed by a Final. In the Preliminary Stage, teams compete in a double round-robin. The time control is 20 minutes for the entire game, with a 2-second increment starting from move 41.

In each matchup of the Preliminary Stage, players' results on each board add points to their teams, as follows:
- 4 game points for winning with Black
- 3 game points for winning with White
- 1 game point for a draw
The cumulative points of the players determine the winner of the match. Teams then earn points as follows:
- 3 match points for winning a match
- 1 match point for drawing a match
At the end of the Preliminary Stage, the top two teams move on to the Final, a best-of-two match. The winner of the Final is the team with the most match points at the end of the match.
