Banana is the common name for herbaceous plants of the genus Musa and for the fruit they produce. They are native to the tropical region of Southeast Asia, and are likely to have been first domesticated in Papua New Guinea.[1] Today, they are cultivated throughout the tropics.[2] Banana plants are in the family Musaceae. They are cultivated primarily for their fruit, and to a lesser extent to make fiber and as ornamental plants. As the banana plants are normally tall and fairly sturdy, they are often mistaken for trees, but their main or upright stem is actually a pseudostem. For some species, this pseudostem can reach a height of 2–8 metres (6.6–26 ft) with leaves of up to 3.5 meters (11 ft) in length. Each pseudostem can produce a bunch of bananas, which turn yellow or sometimes red when they ripen. After fruiting, the pseudostem dies. The banana fruit grow in hanging clusters, with up to 20 fruit to a tier (called a hand), and 3–20 tiers to a bunch. The assembly of hanging clusters is known as a bunch, or commercially as a "banana stem", and can weigh from 30–50 kilograms (66–110 lb). The fruit averages 125 grams (0.28 lb), of which approximately 75% is water and 25% dry matter. Each individual fruit (known as a banana or 'finger') has a protective outer layer (a peel or skin) with a fleshy, edible inner portion. Both skin and inner part can be eaten raw or cooked. The fruit typically has numerous strings (called phloem bundles), which run between the skin and inner part. The inner part of the common yellow dessert variety splits easily lengthwise into three strips. Bananas are a valuable source of vitamin B6, vitamin C, and potassium. 'Cavendish' bananas are the main commercial cultivar Bananas are grown in at least 107 countries.[3] In popular culture and commerce, "banana" usually refers to soft, sweet "dessert" bananas. The bananas from a group of cultivars with firmer, starchier fruit are called plantains. Bananas may also be cut and dried and eaten as a type of chip. Dried bananas are also ground into banana flour. Although the wild species have fruits with numerous large, hard seeds, virtually all culinary bananas have seedless fruits. Bananas are classified either as dessert bananas (meaning they are yellow and fully ripe when eaten) or as green cooking bananas. Almost all export bananas are of the dessert types; however, only about 10–15% of all production is for export, with the United States and European Union being the dominant buyers.

The Fortnight Speed Vote League is registering teams now for Season 3, and this group is invited to participate!!! We play Vote Chess at 10-mins per turn. This is an incredibly fast, exciting and intense way to play chess!!! The entire game is played in a single day, with each team making a move every 20 minutes. Since it is so easy to timeout at this speed, these games are scheduled in advance (usually on a Saturday) so that each team can have their players online and ready to play. No one needs to be online for the entire game (although many choose to be), as long as there is SOMEONE online every 20 minutes to make a move. With each team making exactly 3 moves per hour, an average game lasts 8-12 hours, although there have been a few battles that raged for more than 24 hours. Because these games can be so time consuming, we have decided to switch to a monthly schedule so that each team will only need to play 1 game per month (starting in June). If this group would like to play in Season 3, please go to this thread to register: forumview/fsvl-season-3---registration You can follow all the action in the League Headquarters (everyone is welcome to join): http://www.chess.com/groups/home/the-fortnight-speed-vote-league-headquarters Thanks for taking the time to read this!!! I hope to see you all in Season 3!!!

OK, I've noticed something. I want to say this in the most polite way, but in club Bananas, we don't really DO anything. I think that we should post more puzzles, or play more team matches. ANYTHING. But lately when I come here there isn't anything new, hardly ever. Please comment with your thoughts and ideas.

Hello Everybody, Since you guys are #29 on the Vote Chess Leaderboard, I wanted to invite you to participate in the next season of the Fortnight Speed Vote League. We play Vote Chess at 10-mins per turn, which is incredibly intense, exciting, and addictive. It can also be very time consuming as an average game can last 7-10 hours (the longest game in Season 1 was over 21 hours), and SOMEONE needs to be online to make a move every 20 minutes (no one needs to be online for the whole game of course, as long as SOMEONE is there to stop the game from timing out). If this speed is too fast for you, I can completely understand, I just wanted to give you the opportunity of joining if you wanted to. All you need to do is complete 1 Vote Game at 10-mins per turn (against any group) to prove that you can go the distance without timing out, and put your name in this thread (before October 1st): http://www.chess.com/groups/forumview/season-2---teams Anyone who wishes to follow along with the League is welcome to join the headquarters and/or browse the forums (even if this team doesn't join): http://www.chess.com/groups/view/the-fortnight-speed-vote-league-headquarters We've had an incredible first season (we're in the Semi-Finals right now), and we're looking forward to an even better Season 2. Hope you can join us.
