Dear Chess Friends! You know every time after your opponent makes a move you should ask yourself about the idea behind this move and what your opponent wants to achieve, what his plan is. Even if everything goes well for you in the game you should be one step ahead of your opponent. Remember that your opponent won’t just stay and wait while you are doing your plan! That’s why your task is to discover his plans and disrupt them or at least find a way to impose your style of play. This is what is known as Prophylactic Thinking and it’s a quite important aspect of a chess game! Would you like to learn more about prophylactic thinking and how to use it during games? If so, join my 52nd webinar – “Prophylactic Thinking in Chess” I understand that “Prophylactic Thinking” or “Prophylaxis” is a pretty complicated topic, but if you want to progress in chess you should definitely learn this strong weapon and apply it in almost every game you play. Let me illustrate the idea of Prophylactic Thinking with this simple example. Please, look at this position, evaluate it (it’s white’s turn to move) and tell me what black plan is. How to discover black plan? Just ask yourself: “What would I do in this position, if I were playing for black and it was my turn to move?” The answer will not be long in coming! Black is worse, their pieces are passive and he is playing for a draw. The best way to get a draw is to play 1… Nc4, trade the knights and pass the game into the rook endgames with equal chances (very close to a draw). That’s why as white we play 1. Rc6 to prevent black playing 1… Nc4. (The other way to play was 1. b3 pawn move!) And now 1… Nc4 doesn’t work, because of the back-rank mate by the end of the combination! I hope that this explanation is clear. You will learn more on the webinar. Of course, I’m going to illustrate everything by the examples of games played by top grandmasters and, of course, explain the ideas behind their moves: Mikhail Botvinnik – Vassily Smyslov Konstantin Sakaev – Ivan Sokolov Konstantin Sakaev – Sergei Azarov Come to the webinar, learn prophylactic thinking and disrupt your opponents’ plans! The webinar starts on Sunday (11th of October) at 10 a.m. (EDT), 2 p.m. (GMT), 5 p.m. (Moscow time). This webinar is free.
