Do we, as a group, have interest in playing Team Matches? Could be a fun way to add to the ol' game list.

Let's start off the year with our own little Chess Tournament. After all the holidays, when winter keeps us inside all the more, LET'S PLAY CHESS. Currently we have 11 ChessManiacs members. If ALL the members play, you will have 10 games to play. However only 6 members have played on Chess.com in the last 30 days. So realistically 5 games or less will probably be the reality. The tournament will start the 1st of the New Year. Let's see who the REAL ChessManiac is in our group. Sign-up today! ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- A couple of the members have their e-mail account blocked. This Tournalment is a by invitation only. If you are a ChessManiac and didn't get an invite, let me know.
I see that we're in the 95th percentile for vote chess games. That's particularly impressive since our last four losses were because we didn't move within the time limit. Congrats folks. I'm going to start up two vote chess games. Everyone please join us. I have found them to be quite educational. Please don't vote until we've decided on a move or unless no one has voted and there's only a few hours left.

James_Bond wrote: games have already started with the new time controls, i have not made any moves in any of them, if i withdraw as you say TadDude, will it change my rating? Yes. Resignations and withdrawals affect ratings with no minimum number of moves. You may have a case for having your rating reset since the TD changed the tournament conditions after you entered. See the contact link.

When I first became involved with this web site, I learned almost instantly that there are a LOT of very interesting people here. Yes, some of them are in this chess group (Eric and Scotterpop come to mind). And, I just found another one that I don't want to forget. So, I thought it might be fun to create a forem where we could share interesting profiles with our chess group members. So, if you find profiles you'd think we'd like to see, please post them here for everyone's enjoyment. I believe the charter entry for this forem is exceptional and inspiring. DrawMaster is his name, and the link to his personal profile is below: http://www.chess.com/members/view/DrawMaster Interesting features include: 1. His name 2. His icon 3. High quality - He had to spend quite a bit of time putting it together

I ran across this one a few minutes ago, and I immediately knew that we needed an interesting game names category in the forems too. Here's the charter name: I am not a vegetarian because I love animals; I am a vegetarian because I hate plants.
Day One Lesson One When the opponent says ..... Hello I hope you enjoy the game .... then a good response from you would be to say something like..."What do you mean by that?" or "So you decided to stop being mean to everyone?" Both responses immediately put the opponent on the defensive and second guessing everything, including their chess moves. They are much like a discovered check. A potential third benefit is that they may be uncomfortable playing against you from that moment forward. The estimated increase in your rating with using this technique is approximately 50 points?

I was going through my bookshelf and noticed something odd. First, I did not receive the new 4th edition of Silman's Reassess Your Chess for Christmas. Actually, that was noticed in bags, not my bookshelf. Second, I noticed that I possess two copies of the 3rd edition. (http://www.amazon.com/How-Reassess-Your-Chess-Chess-Mastery/dp/1890085006) Which leads me to this. I have friends who might like to have a copy to study! So, fellow Maniacs. Who wants it (free)? I may have to come up with some kind of contest, I suppose, if there are more than one of you...

I thought we should have a forum topic to spread the word amongst our group on new tournaments of interest...so here it is. And for our first tournament of interest... I've just created a new tournament to get off my 1.c4 kick. Starting position is the Queen's Gambit Declined (D30): http://www.chess.com/tournament/queens-gambit-declined-d30-open--starts-1111--no-vacation No vacation, 5 day/move, <10% timeouts, 10 complete games, open ratings.

Below I some suggested guidelines for vote chess games that I shamelessly copied from another group page (including this message!). Those are good guidelines, if we follow them our results will look good - but more importantly your game itself will improve. So don't just sit back and follow the suggestions of whomever you perceive to be the strongest, get involved yourself! * It is "Team" vote chess - i.e. we suggest, discuss, plan and play together. * It's all about fun and is a good chance to learn from others - but this can only be achieved if we confer with each other over our moves. * Please do not vote without first having put your move(s) up for discussion. * Individuals can suggest one or more moves - preferably with plenty of time to go. * The moves are discussed and analysed, and the preferred moves will become obvious - and why. * The best result is where everyone agrees on a single move - everyone then votes for that move. * If there is more than one preferred move, people vote on which one they feel is the best. * People's geographical locations need to be taken into consideration - allow them time to read and comment. * Please do not vote until the last 24 hours of the game - this is to allow good discussion and preferred move/s to become clear. It is acknowledged that time zones may mean you have to vote with a lot of hours to go... * "Exceptions are if you know you're not going to be around in the last 24 hours, if there's a clear path to forced mate or if there's general consensus in the discussion to vote early for other reasons." * When discussing moves, please refer to them by their move number and using the notation for White and Black as follows: 1. e4 for White 1. ... e5 for Black - i.e. incude the three dots.

Thanks to Verbal for letting me know about this site. It's similar to the one here, but there's no limit to the number of times you can use it. http://chess.emrald.net/
