Game Over. Caravela defeated oinquarki. In Chess960, the rules are exactly the same as in regular chess. The only difference is that the starting position is randomly generated, so opening knowlege doesn't help. When castling on the h-side (White's right side), the King ends on g1 (g8), and the rook on f1 (f8), just like the O-O move in Orthodox chess. When castling on the a-side (White's left side), the King ends on c1 (c8), and the rook on d1 (d8), just like the O-O-O move in Orthodox chess. Sometimes the King will not need to move; sometimes the Rook will not need to move. That's OK. Post your move using algebraic notation. Idea from Sahist4, rules from chessvariants.com. The standard game of Alice Chess is played using two boards, A and B. All pieces move as in standard chess. The normal array is on board A; board B starts empty. The rules are very simple. In turn, each player makes a single move on either board following these three rules: A move must be legal on the board where it is played. A piece can only move or capture if the corresponding destination square on the other board is vacant. After moving, the piece is transferred to the corresponding square on the other board. This chess variant was invented by one of our members, Goatllama (hence the name of the variant.) The rules are just like normal chess, but you have a bigger board and 2 armies. The first one your opponent's kings must be captured. The remaining one is to be checkmated. That's pretty much it for the rules, unless Goatllama himself wants to add anything. Post your move using algebraic notation. The first post (this one) will have a move list and a picture of the board. Game Over. Team 2 defeated Team 1. In bughouse chess, there are 2 teams of 2 players. And 2 boards, too. Teammates play on separate boards and opposite colors. When you capture a piece, it goes into your teammate's storehouse.Your teammate can, instead of making a normal move, put a piece on the board from the storehouse. Pieces can only be placed on vacant squares. Pawns may not be placed on the first and last rank. If a promoted pawn is captured, it becomes a pawn in the storehouse. The game ends as soon as anybody gets checkmated. So even if you are about to lose in one turn, but your teammate checkmates his/her opponent your team wins. The game will start as soon as we have 4 players ready to go. Post your move using algebraic notation. When placing a piece from the storehouse, use the @ symbol in your notation. For example to place a knight from the store house on d6, type N@d6. When I see a move posted I will update and flip the diagram. Also, the games are not simultaneous. Board A can be on move 20 while board B is on move 2. Please post something when you join so that I know. Make sure you track this topic so that you know when it is your move. Have fun! Every time a square is vacated, because a piece moves away from it, the square disappears. "The elephant and the hawk are introduced to the game in the following way: whenever the player moves a piece from its starting position (that hasn't already been moved), one of the pieces in hand may be placed immediately on the square just vacated. One cannot use the placing of an elephant or hawk to block check. If the player moves all his pieces from the first rank without placing one or both in hand pieces, he forfeits the right to do so. After castling, the player may put one of the pieces in hand on either the king's or the rook's square, but he may not place both pieces in hand in the same turn. Pawns may promote to a hawk or an elephant in this game (in addition to the normal chess pieces). When notating games in algebraic notation, the letter E is used for the Elephant and H for the Hawk. Game over. Sahist4 defeated preachingforjesus. Shogi is not a chess variant. It is a Japanese, chess-like game that evolved from the same ancestor as chess. But it is still an awesome game so we are going to play it! The pieces are marked with a small letter in the lower right corner in case you don't know the Kanji symbols. The symbol changes and turns red when the piece promotes. A plus sign is added after the letter. King - Each player has 1 king. The king is the most important piece on the board in the sense that the object of the game is to checkmate the king in the same manner as in International chess. The king occupies the centre of the first rank, ie: black's king is on 5i, and white's is on 5a. The king may move 1 square in any direction like the king in chess, that is, one square in a n, n-e, e, s-e, s, s-w, w, n-w direction. The king does not promote. Gold General - Each player has 2 golds. The golds occupiy the 2 positions either side of the king, ie: black's golds are on 4i and 6i, and white's are on 4a and 6a. The gold moves one square in any direction exceptthe two rearward diagonal squares, that is, one square in a n-w, n, ne, s, w, e direction. The gold does not promote. Silver General - Each player has 2 silvers. The silvers occupy the 2 positions either side of the golds, ie: black's silvers are on 3i and 7i, and white's are on 3a and 7a. The silver moves one square in any direction exceptorthogonally left, right or backwards, that is, one square in a n-w, n, n-e, s-w, s-e direction. The silver may promote to gold once it has entered the promotion zone. Knight - Each player has 2 knights. The knights occupy the 2 positions either side of the silvers, ie: black's knights are on 2i and 8i, and white's are on 2a and 8a. The knight moves one square forward and then one square diagonally, left or right (ie: a restricted form of the knights move in Chess), that is, one square n followed by one square n-w or n-e. Pieces on the intervening squares are ignored. The knight is the onlypiece which may jump other pieces in this way. The knight may promote to gold once it has entered the promotion zone. Lance - Each player has 2 lances to start with. They occupy the corners of the board, ie: black's lances are on 1i and 9i, and white's are on 1a and 9a. The lance moves any number of squares forward, that is, any number of squares n. When it enters the opponents promotion zone (the furthest away third of the board), the lance may promote to gold if desired. Bishop - Each player has one bishop which occupies 8h (black) and 2b (white) at the start of the game. The bishops move is the same as that in Chess - any number of squares in any of the diagonal directions, that is, n-w, n-e, s-e, s-w. The bishop may promote and acquire the extra power to move one square only in any of the orthogonal directions, that is, one square n, e, s, w. Rook - Each player has one rook which occupies 2h (black) and 8b (white) at the start of the game. The rooks move is the same as that in Chess - any number of squares in any of the orthogonal directions, that is, n, e, s, w. The rook may promote and acquire the extra power to move one square only in any of the orthogonal directions, that is, one square n-e, s-e, s-w, n-w. Pawn - The pawns occupy the third rank on each side. Each player has 9 pawns to start with. The pawn moves (and captures) one square forward, that is, one square n. When it enters the opponents promotion zone, the pawn may promote to gold if desired. Most pieces (pawn, lance, knight, silver, rook, bishop) may be promoted on reaching the promotion zone (the furthest away three ranks of the board). Pieces are promoted by turning them over so that their promoted characters are visible. Pawn, lance, knight and silver promote to gold. Rook and bishop have their powers enhanced by being allowed to move one square in a diagonal (rook) or orthogonal (bishop) direction. Note that promotion is not mandatory, and there are some strategic situations in which it may be disadvantageous to do so. Note however, that when a piece would no longer have a valid move after the current one, it mustpromote - that is, when a lance or pawn reaches the last rank, or when a knight reaches either of the last two ranks. Once promoted, a piece may not be 'unpromoted'. Finally, remember that although the discussion above assumes that promotion takes place (or not) when a piece first enters the promotion zone, in fact, a piece may be promoted in the course of a normal move as it enters or leaves the promotion zone or as part of a move entirely within the promotion zone. Pieces may not 'un-promote'. A player may elect to 'drop' a captured piece instead of moving a piece. This is one of the features which makes shogi so different from chess. Basically a piece may be dropped anywhere with the provisos that: It is forbidden to have more than one unpromoted pawn on the same file;A pawn may not be dropped to give direct checkmate;A piece may not be dropped where it does not have a legal move (ie: a lance or pawn on the last rank, or a knight on either of the last two ranks);A piece may not be promoted as it is dropped (a dropped piece may only be promoted after it has actually moved). Also, dropping a pawn onto a file already accupied by one of your pawns is illegal. To notate moves, a piece is named and the destination square named also. For example (referring to the starting setup), P-7f.It should be clear what this means, but note the abbreviations: P - pawn, L - lance, N - knight, S - silver, G - gold, R - rook, B - bishop, K - king.Captureis indicated by a 'x', eg: Px1c - note the captured piece is not explicitly named in the notation. When a pieceis promoted after the move, a '+' is appended, eg: Px1c+.When a promotedpiece is subsequently moved, it is prepended with a '+', eg: +P-2b.Strictly, if a piece does not promote when it could, an '=' should be appended to the move, eg: Px1c=.A 'drop'of a captured piece which is 'in hand' is designated with a '*', eg: L*9d.In casesof ambiguity, the starting square of the piece being moved is indicated, eg: (considering the starting set-up), G6i-5h.Each playes individual moves are numbered in Japanese games, unlike international chess where moves are numbered in pairs. Rules from Shogi.net Whew! That's a really long list of rules! I hope you can remember them all! Post your move using shogi notation. Ever played pacman? You know how if you off of the left edge of the board you come out on the right edge? Well now your chess pieces can do the same thing! It is as if the board is wrapped around a cylinder. A knight on h4 can move to a6. If you play 1. g3, then that pins black's d pawn. When you post your move, put the position onto a diagram. Copy the FEN from the diagram of the previous move and use it to make a new diagram which has your move included into it. Also do the same with the move list, copy it and add your move. This will make it so that you can play even when I am not here to update the board, but I will update it anyway as a backup (because this is the first time using this system.) Game Over. DPG1232 won by king detonation. Idea from chessmaniac5. Rules from Wikipedia. In atomic chess, both pieces are removed from the board (i.e. "killed"). Furthermore, this atomic explosion extends to all eight surrounding squares. Any pieces caught in the surrounding squares are also captured with the exception of pawns. Pawns are captured only when they are involved in the actual capture event in the central square. In en passant, ground-zero of the explosion is the square on the sixth rank upon which the capturing pawn lands. The game frequently ends with one king being caught in the explosion of a surrounding piece. Moves that result in the explosion of your own king are illegal. Post your move using algebraic notation. I have tried to modify that into a two player game that can be played on the forums. I call it Fenomic Chess. The rules listed below may seem rather complicated, but the idea behind them is rather simple: after each move, you can propose a change to the rules. If your opponent agrees on the rules change, it goes into effect. The restriction on rules changes that I added was that you can't make a rule that makes it so you can't represent the game in FEN notation. That way we can use the forum's diagram tool to represent the game. Anyone want to give it a try? Initial Set of Rules Immutable Rules 101. All players must always abide by all the rules then in effect, in the form in which they are then in effect. The rules in the Initial Set are in effect whenever a game begins. The Initial Set consists of Rules 101-116 (immutable) and 201 - 210 (mutable). 102. Initially rules in the 100's are immutable and rules in the 200's are mutable. Rules subsequently enacted or transmuted (that is, changed from immutable to mutable or vice versa) may be immutable or mutable regardless of their numbers, and rules in the Initial Set may be transmuted regardless of their numbers. 103. A rule-change is any of the following: (1) the enactment, repeal, or amendment of a mutable rule; (2) the enactment, repeal, or amendment of an amendment of a mutable rule; or (3) the transmutation of an immutable rule into a mutable rule or vice versa. (Note: This definition implies that, at least initially, all new rules are mutable; immutable rules, as long as they are immutable, may not be amended or repealed; mutable rules, as long as they are mutable, may be amended or repealed; any rule of any status may be transmuted; no rule is absolutely immune to change.) 104. All rule-changes proposed in the proper way must be vetoed or accepted by the opposing player before the next move is made. 105. All proposed rule-changes shall be written down before they are vetoed or accepted. If they are adopted, they shall guide play in the form in which they were accepted. 106. No rule-change may take effect earlier than the moment of the acceptance of the rule, even if its wording explicitly states otherwise. No rule-change may have retroactive application. 107. Each proposed rule-change shall be given a number for reference. The numbers shall begin with 301, and each rule-change proposed in the proper way shall receive the next successive integer, whether or not the proposal is adopted. If a rule is repealed and reenacted, it receives the number of the proposal to reenact it. If a rule is amended or transmuted, it receives the number of the proposal to amend or transmute it. If an amendment is amended or repealed, the entire rule of which it is a part receives the number of the proposal to amend or repeal the amendment. 108. Rule-changes that transmute immutable rules into mutable rules shall not be implied, but must be stated explicitly in a proposal to take effect. 109. In a conflict between a mutable and an immutable rule, the immutable rule takes precedence and the mutable rule shall be entirely void. For the purposes of this rule a proposal to transmute an immutable rule does not "conflict" with that immutable rule. 110. If a rule-change as proposed is unclear, ambiguous, paradoxical, or destructive of play, or if it arguably consists of two or more rule-changes compounded or is an amendment that makes no difference, or if it is otherwise of questionable value, then the opposing player may suggest amendments before approving or vetoing the rule-change. The proponent decides the final form in which the proposal is to be accepted or vetoed. 111. The state of affairs that constitutes winning may not be altered from eliminating the other player from the game to any other state of affairs. The rules for determining how a player is eliminated from the game may be changed, and rules that establish a winner when play cannot continue may be enacted and (while they are mutable) be amended or repealed. 112. A player always has the option to forfeit the game rather than continue to play or incur a game penalty. No penalty worse than losing, in the judgment of the player to incur it, may be imposed. 113. There must always be at least one mutable rule. The adoption of rule-changes must never become completely impermissible. 114. Rule-changes that affect rules needed to allow or apply rule-changes are as permissible as other rule-changes. Even rule-changes that amend or repeal their own authority are permissible. No rule-change or type of move is impermissible solely on account of the self-reference or self-application of a rule. 115. Whatever is not prohibited or regulated by a rule is permitted and unregulated, with the sole exception of changing the rules, which is permitted only when a rule or set of rules explicitly or implicitly permits it. 116. No rule-change may transform the game into one which cannot be represented by standard FEN notation. Mutable Rules 201. Players shall alternate turns according to which army or armies they control. Turns may not be skipped or passed, and parts of turns may not be omitted. Both players begin with a standard half-set of FIDE chess pieces placed upon a common FIDE chess board in the standard initial array. 202. One turn consists of three parts in this order: (1) accepting or vetoing any rule-change proposed by the opposing player at the end of their last turn, (2) moving one's army, (3) optionally proposing one rule-change. 203. A rule-change is adopted if and only if it is accepted by the opposing player. 205. An adopted rule-change takes full effect at the moment it is accepted by the opposing player. 206. The winner is the first player to eliminate the other player from the game. 207. At no time may there be more than 23 mutable rules. 208. If two or more mutable rules conflict with one another, or if two or more immutable rules conflict with one another, then the rule with the lowest ordinal number takes precedence. If at least one of the rules in conflict explicitly says of itself that it defers to another rule (or type of rule) or takes precedence over another rule (or type of rule), then such provisions shall supersede the numerical method for determining precedence. If two or more rules claim to take precedence over one another or to defer to one another, then the numerical method again governs. 209. If the rules are changed so that further play is impossible, or if the legality of a move cannot be determined with finality, or if by the Judge's best reasoning, not overruled, a move appears equally legal and illegal, then the first player unable to complete a turn is considered to be stalemated. This rule takes precedence over every other rule determining the winner. 210. Except as otherwise provided in these rules, the rules of FIDE chess apply.

Game over. Bobobbob and awesomd won by checkmate against oinquarki and preachingforjesus. Have fun! Game over. Oinquarki won by checkmate. BigOto came in second place. This will be the first 4 way chess game on chess.com! (Unless somebody beat me to the idea, but I don't think anybody did. I checked before starting this group.) White goes first, then green, then black, and then red. When you checkmate a king you can either take control of the army (beware: if one of the kings is checkmated or if both are attacked in one turn, you are out completely. Also if you do this, you do not recieve double turns.) or if are not a risk taker, you may leave the pieces inert (that means they do nothing). Post your move using algebraic notation. The first post (this one) will have a move list and a picture of the board. Every time I see a new post, I will update the picture of the board and turn it so that the side who's turn it is comes up in front. Make sure you track this topic so that you know when it is your move. As soon as you join the game post something so that I know. The game will begin as soon as we have 4 people ready to go. Game over due to Lahlie leaving the group. Game adjudicated as a win for black by arbiter. Elephant: Moves like a knight or like a rook. (looks like an actual elephant, not like the standard piece.) Hawk: Moves like a knight or a bishop. (looks like an actual bird, not like the standard piece.) Idea from Lahlie, text from Wikipedia. If the player places one of the two pieces on the board, it's written after a slash. For example, 1. Nc3/Eb1 means that the player moved his knight from b1 to c3 and placed the elephant on b1."
