For the sake of not getting confused I will refer to the opening as the Schliemann. The mainlines are 4.Nc3 and 4.d3 and I will get into those in another forum. But there are many other things White can try and it is good to know how to deal with them.

Here we will discuss what happens if white plays one of the mainlines, 4. d3 in responce to the Schliemann, and how to deal with it. Theoreticly, Nc3 is better than d3 but both are the main lines. I will cover Nc3 in another forum. Black often has to accept a draw but that is not bad as usually white is playing for a win and in the Schliemann it is black. Here is more info on how to respond to 4.d3 I got a few of the games in the diagram from master games, but forgot which. You can check if you like. I remember the anand one so I put it in the diagram. This is all I know about how to repond to d3. Feel free to aks questions or add to what I posted.
Nc3 is the main line (Or the hardest one to face - d3 is usually played a bit more at club player level) It is the most critical line so needs the most analysis. How to deal with Nc3:

Here I will do my best to answer any questions on the schliemann gambit. Also Diogenes_of_Sinope because he seems to know a lot about the opening as well. Anyone is welcome to answer what they think the answer is. Here is where we will discuss and learn together about the opening, other than the forums on specific varyations. Here it is more generalised. Also if you play a game where you play the Schliemann (I recomend you do) please post it here and we will discuss, and analyze it together. :) - logozar

We will clearly not face the Ruy lopez every time, after e4 e5. We could fight the kings gambit, some quiet openings, italian, scotch, Dutch gambit, and much more. So we need to build up our retribire for other openings (not ruy lopez) and how to play them as black. Please post what you know on the openings you play as black here (after e4 e5 and not ruy), and if you have any questions about any of the openings. We will try to answer as best we can.
Maybe the most famous Schliemann Game, although it ended in a win for White: Fischer-Matulovic (Blitz), 1970. What are your favourite Schliemann games? Post master games, or your own.

Gordon412 asked in the notes: I just played 1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.Bb5 f5 4.Nc3 fxe4 5.Nxe4 Nf6 as per the forum here. It occurs to me that 5...d5 really might need another look. Thoughts? Here is the position that Gordon is talking about: The move is good in principle; black get two pawns in the center and should be better if white simply retreats with Nc3. However, white has the idea of Nxe5!? Am I missing something here?
