FSVL Rules (Updated for Season 3): The FSVL is open to 24 teams this season (up from the previous 20). Each team will have 5 games scheduled in the Regular Season (up from the previous 4). Season 3 will run from June 2010 thru January 2011. Games will now be scheduled once per month rather than the previous format of once per fortnight. At some point during each month, each team will complete one game of Vote Chess against the team on their schedule for that month. It is the responsibility of the Team Administrators to coordinate start times with their opposing teams each month. If no agreement can be reached, the FSVL HQ will be forced to step in and set a start time. All games will be played on a Saturday UNLESS both teams agree on an alternate day. All games must be played during the month they are scheduled. No early games will count. Once the start time has been agreed upon, a team will forfeit the match if they do not accept the challenge within 1 hour of the scheduled start time. Every Vote Chess game will be played at 10-minutes per turn. Every Vote Chess game will be played with random color settings. The first 5 months will be the “Regular Season” with the next 3 months being the “Post Season” or “Playoffs.” Teams will be ranked according to this point system: Win = 3 points Draw = 1 point Ties are broken via the Chess.com Tournament Tie-Breaker system first (Opponent's Strength), fewest number of forfeits second, fewest number of timeouts third, and then the “First Blood” system last (if two teams have the same number of points, the team that scored their points first is ranked higher). There will be no more conferences or wild cards. The Top 8 teams at the end of the Regular Season will advance to the playoffs. Month 6 (November) will be the Quarter Finals with only the Top 8 teams competing. The #1 team will play the #8 team The #2 team will play the #7 team The #3 team will play the #6 team The #4 team will play the #5 team Month 7 (December) will be the Semi-Finals between the four Quarter-Final winners. The #1 team will play the #4 team The #2 team will play the #3 team Month 8 (January) will be the FSVL Finals between the winners of each Semi-Final game. The winner of this game will be the Champion for that Season. If you have any comments or suggestions, please let me know. These rules are subject to change (based on group discussions and votes), so please check this thread (and more specifically this post) regularly.

For a while there, when you navigated to a group's page, and clicked on View Members, there was a Vote Chess item on the right for checking their vote games. This menu now seems to be gone, but you can still get to their vote chess games by typing in the url, eg. http://www.chess.com/groups/votechess/the-power-of-chess

Happy 69 Day Everyone!!! Welcome to Season 3 of the Fortnight Speed Vote League!!! The Alien vs. Predator Season There have been a couple of changes made for Season 3. First of all, as most of you know, we are now on a monthly schedule which means that each team will only need to play one game per month rather than one game every 2 weeks. EVERY GAME MUST BE PLAYED WITHIN THE MONTH THAT IT IS SCHEDULED!!!You may NOT play your games ahead of schedule if you wish for that game to count!!! Secondly, there are no more divisions. The 5 teams you face will not be the same 5 your opponents face. This should produce more separation between teams with similar records (instead of each division mirroring each other). Standings will be based first on Total Score (3 points for a win, 1 point for a draw, 0 for a loss), then on Opponent's Strength (Chess.com's tournament tie-breaker system), and only if two teams are still tied will the First Blood rule take effect. I hope this makes everybody happy. I worked real hard on trying to address each of your concerns. We are constantly trying to improve the league so that everyone can have as much fun as possible. When I was making up the schedule, I did not pay any attention to group size, overall vote chess winning percentage, or leaderboard points. The stats I used were exclusively speed vote games. Groups were ordered by experience (# of games and length of games) and playing strength (win/loss record). I tried to make sure no one played a team that they played in a previous season, but in one case (Animal Lovers vs Chess Empire) it was unavoidable. I also tried to avoid any conflicts of interest by not scheduling 2 teams against each other who had a common administrator. But in a few cases, I couldn't help it. Sorry to Atudor (Chess Nuts vs Chess Unlimited) and Olympiakaras (Chess Unlimited vs Light Force). So many teams have made me an administrator, that it happened to me twice (Team Antarctica vs Burning Pawns; The Dark Knights vs Wallyjack's Wonderful Wizards of Oz). And finally, knowing everyone's time zone really did help a lot. I can't guarantee that everyone is playing against someone in the exact same time zone, but I did the best I could at grouping everyone together so that scheduling conflicts should be at a minimum. So here is your schedule for Season 3:(because I was late in posting this, any games scheduled for June 2010 will have until July 10th to be played - July games must still be played between July 1st and July 31st regardless of when the June game is played) June 2010 Chess Empire vs We Chat Global - Submission (move 46)Glorius Chess vs Wallyjack's Premium Members Group - Timeout (move 23)Team Antarctica vs Burning Pawns - Timeout (move 23)Red Army vs Light Force - Draw (move 24)Electronic Team vs Turk Chess Players - Submission (move 35) Animal Lovers vs The Power of Chess - Submission (move 53) Chess Nuts vs Chess UnlimitedFast Players Group vs The Dark KnightsSuper Troopers vs CheckmateWallyjack's Wonderful Wizards of Oz vs The Winning TeamChess Destination vs Lovers of ChessThe Learning Group vs Night Owls Insanity Club July 2010 Animal Lovers vs Chess Empire Chess Nuts vs Super Troopers Fast Players Group vs Wallyjack's Wonderful Wizards of Oz Team Antarctica vs Red ArmyThe Power of Chess vs Chess DestinationThe Dark Knights vs Glorius ChessChess Unlimited vs Electronic TeamBurning Pawns vs The Learning GroupLight Force vs Lovers of ChessWe Chat Global vs Wallyjack's Premium Members GroupCheckmate vs Turk Chess PlayersThe Winning Team vs Night Owls Insanity Club August 2010 Animal Lovers vs The Winning Team Chess Nuts vs We Chat Global Fast Players Group vs Light Force Team Antarctica vs CheckmateThe Power of Chess vs Turk Chess Players The Dark Knights vs Night Owls Insanity Club Chess Unlimited vs Wallyjack's Premium Members Group Burning Pawns vs Lovers of ChessSuper Troopers vs Glorius Chess Red Army vs The Learning Group Chess Empire vs Electronic Team Wallyjack's Wonderful Wizards of Oz vs Chess Destination September 2010 Animal Lovers vs The Learning Group Chess Nuts vs Electronic Team Fast Players Group vs Chess Destination Team Antarctica vs Glorius ChessThe Power of Chess vs Checkmate The Dark Knights vs We Chat Global Chess Unlimited vs Light Force Burning Pawns vs The Winning TeamSuper Troopers vs Wallyjack's Premium Members Group Red Army vs Night Owls Insanity Club Chess Empire vs Turk Chess Players Wallyjack's Wonderful Wizards of Oz vs Lovers of Chess October 2010 Animal Lovers vs Lovers of Chess Chess Nuts vs Turk Chess Players Fast Players Group vs Night Owls Insanity Club Team Antarctica vs Wallyjack's Premium Members GroupThe Power of Chess vs Chess Empire The Dark Knights vs Wallyjack's Wonderful Wizards of Oz Chess Unlimited vs Super Troopers Burning Pawns vs Red ArmyLight Force vs The Learning Group We Chat Global vs Chess Destination Checkmate vs Electronic Team The Winning Team vs Glorius Chess November 2010 Quarter-Finals (teams to be determined) December 2010 Semi-Finals (teams to be determined) January 2011 Finals (teams to be determined) Here are the links to each group's home page (listed alphabetically): Animal Lovers Burning Pawns (SVC) Checkmate! Anyone who wishes to enter their group into the Fortnight Speed Vote League for Season 3, please post a comment in this thread. In order to qualify for the Fortnight Speed Vote League, your group must have completed at least one Vote Chess Game at 10-mins/turn without timing out. I will also need the names of one primary administrator and one secondary administrator who will take responsibility for coordinating the league games and making sure they are played according to schedule. To help in working out the divisions, I would also like to know the time zones that the 2 designated administrators live in. Thank you. Season 3 will begin in June. Stay tuned for more details. PLEASE NOTE: In Season 3, we will be switching to a monthly schedule!! This means each team will play 1 game per month instead of 1 game per fortnight. There have been some suggestions that the name "Fortnight Speed Vote League" is no longer accurate (since we are switching to a monthly schedule) and should be changed. Being the conservative that I am, and knowing how a name change will invalidate any links which currently point to this group, I am reluctant. In American College Football, the "Big Ten" has had 11 teams in it for 20 years now, and yet they are still called the "Big Ten" to maintain continuity. Likewise, I really don't have a problem keeping the FSVL name, even tho we're no longer on a Fortnight schedule. However, if it is going to change, it's only going to change this once, and it's got to change to something REALLY cool. Since the schedule has changed from Weekend to Fortnight to Monthly, I don't think any of these time frames should be in the new title (just in case something changes again). In fact, the only thing we can be sure of remaining constant is the 10-mins/turn time setting. So maybe we can work that into the title somehow (maybe using the words "blitz" and "vote"). I'm not making any promises, but I'm opening up this forum to see what kind of ideas we can get for the new and PERMANENT name for this league. Creativity is essential!! So start posting your ideas now, and let's see what happens.

David Pruess of Chess.com staff is looking for players who have had trouble joining ongoing vote games because they have left the opponent's group, or players who have been booted from ongoing games when they quit the opponent's group. If you have had experiences like this, could you post them to the New vote chess rule? thread in the Help & Support forum?

Now that we've played a couple seasons, I decided to combine the results into one table (I just love working with spreadsheets ). Since there are 20 teams per season, I gave 20 points to 1st place, 19 points to 2nd place,... 2 points to 19th place, 1 point to 20th place, etc.. Since this is the same table I use to figure out which of the new teams are most qualified to enter the league (and will probably also help me in making out the divisions), the table is sorted next by Longest Game (LG) (I want to know if they can go the distance cuz some of our games are real marathons, so the longer they've gone, the better), then by Time Out Percentage (T%) (Cuz timeouts are what this league was founded to avoid). And since a team with 0% timout in 10 games is better than a team with 0% timeout in 1 game, the next sort is by Number of Games Played (GP) (The TO column is the actual number of Timeouts (for reference purposes)). Finally we have the Wins (W), Losses (L), and Draw (D) columns. League games which were forfeits are not included - only games that were actually started (even if they timed out before any move was made). The exception to this rule is all the games that were "timed out" due to the site crashing (repeatedly) on December 12th, 2009. Several teams were victims of this crash, and anyone who was playing that day remembers it well. I'm not about to blemish someone's perfect timeout record with something they had no control over (especially since the games needed to be re-played anyway). Teams with an (*) probably have incomplete stats. If you are a member of one of these teams and would like to give me more accurate numbers, I'll be sure to include them (believe it or not, I'm not a member of EVERY group on Chess.com ). The Power of Chess has a few boxes empty cuz I didn't feel like looking thru another 117 games to get those stats. If you feel like taking the time to compile those numbers, I'll be sure to fill in the blanks with whatever you find. And finally, you'll notice a lot of teams at the bottom who have never played a single game. Any team that has ever had even a remote interest in joining this league is on this list. Some decided not to play after all. Some kept saying they wanted to join, but never played a qualifying game. They're all listed alphabetically. As of April 7, 2010: Team Pts LG T% TO GP W L D Animal Lovers (Season 2 Champs) 37 81 0 0 13 7 3 3 Chess Nuts 37 81 0 0 12 9 2 1 Fast Players Group * (Season 1 Champs) 35 58 0 0 10 8 2 0 Team Antartica 24 58 0 0 8 5 3 0 The Power of Chess 24 52 117 The Dark Knights 23 43 7 1 15 9 4 2 Chess Unlimited 22 56 36 24 67 35 31 1 Burning Pawns 19 75 32 18 57 32 22 3 Kairav's Chess Masters 18 58 27 8 30 18 11 1 Super Troopers 17 75 0 0 9 6 1 2 Red Army 16 56 14 3 22 18 3 1 Chess Empire 16 55 42 5 12 5 6 1 The Blakenators 15 42 20 1 5 3 1 1 The Premiere of All * 14 35 25 1 4 1 3 0 Wallyjack's Wonderful Wizards of Oz 13 53 0 0 5 0 4 1 Light Force 13 31 30 7 23 9 13 1 Narz's People 12 37 25 1 4 2 2 0 Rapid Chess 12 36 40 4 10 1 9 0 Supreme Pawns 10 10 57 4 7 3 4 0 We Chat Global 9 43 0 0 6 4 2 0 Chess & Cola Club 9 41 25 1 4 2 2 0 The Scotch Fans Team 6 58 43 18 42 19 21 2 Checkmate 4 55 53 9 17 4 12 1 The Best * 4 1 0 0 1 1 0 0 Chess Team Holland * 3 16 100 2 2 0 2 0 The Winning Team 3 11 91 20 22 2 20 0 Chess Maniacs 2 17 80 4 5 1 4 0 Team Benelux "de Leeuwen" * 2 1 100 1 1 0 1 0 Chess Friends for Friends 1 1 50 1 2 1 1 0 Icelandic Group 0 48 45 13 29 14 15 0 SnowWhite 0 43 0 0 3 3 0 0 Glorius Chess 0 43 0 0 2 1 0 1 Chess Destination 0 43 0 0 1 0 0 1 Chetumal * 0 32 0 0 1 0 1 0 Team Indonesia * 0 32 22 2 9 7 2 0 The Learning Group 0 23 50 3 6 3 3 0 Chess Club Finland * 0 18 0 0 1 1 0 0 Black Shield Assassins 0 16 5 1 19 18 1 0 The Cool Boys and Girls Chess Group 0 4 60 6 10 4 6 0 Chess Association 0 1 100 1 1 0 1 0 Black or White 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 Cheers! 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 Chess Mistresses * 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 European Union Team * 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 Funtastic Chessmates 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 International Chess Masters * 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 Sacred Pawn Legion 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 The Dream Team * 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 The Three Kingdoms 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 The Ultimate Alliance 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 Tough and Social * 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 Good Luck to Everyone in Season 3!!!

I think that if the demmand is there this league should be expanded, possibly to 24 teams. Here is a format that I would suggest: 4 groups of 6 with first place from each group going through to the quarter finals while all the second and third place teams play each other(a second place team vs a third place team) with the 4 winners of that also going through to the quarter finals. It would also be possible to have just the top 2 teams from each group go through to the quarter finals. It might also be possible to have 6 groups of 4 but I don't think this would work as well. If there was a huge demmand then it could even be expanded to 32 teams with a world cup like format(8 groups of 4 teams with top 2 advancing). I might also be possible to have something like 5 groups of 5 with top 2 from each group as well as best 2 3rd places advancing to playoffs(top 4 seeded first place teams advance to quarters and the other 8 play off in preliminary knockout round also according to their seeds(1 vs 8, 2 vs 7 etc) And finally if the league is not going to be expanded I suggest that the format is changed. I think that it should be changed to that like the rugby world cup, basically the same thing only the top 2 from each group advance, not the top 4 placed teams other than first places. This could slightly change the teams in the playoffs in some cases, especially if you had 2 teams in the same group with a 2-1-1 record, and 3 teams tied for second place in another group, each with a 2-2-0 record. The only problem would be how to decide which team gets second and which gets third(if this did happen, the head to head would most likely be a draw if 2 teams involved, and one win, one loss if three teams involved, so that couldn't decide it, and the tiebreak system used in chess.com tournaments would also be the same). Maybe in the case of there being 2 teams involved and the head to head was a draw you could put the team who was black in the head to head game through, since in theorey they should be at a slight disadvantage, however this could lead to arguments about who goes black at the start of the game, so it doesn't seem too fair. Please tell me what you think of my suggestions.

The Fortnight Speed Vote League Champions for Season 2 (The Frankenstein vs Dracula Season) are: Animal Lovers!! Congratulations!!! That's pretty good for a group that only entered Season 1 cuz we needed one more team to make 20. That's like the last kid to get picked for the team who ends up making the winning play. Animal Lovers finished the season with 6 wins, 1 loss, and 1 draw. Their 1 loss came in the regular season against Chess Unlimited, and their 1 draw came in the playoffs against Red Army. This is appropriate because in the regular season, Chess Unlimited beat Animal Lovers, Animal Lovers beat Red Army, and Red Army beat Chess Unlimited (ironically, all 3 games were won by black). All 3 made it to the playoffs. In the playoffs, they found themselves once again in the Semi-Finals, and once again, their opponent was the Chess Nuts!! This time however, it was the Animal Lovers who would be advancing to the Finals. No one knew who the Animal Lovers, the Cinderella team who barely squeaked into the playoffs last season, would face in the final round. Burning Pawns and Super Troopers waged a war that lasted for 138 moves (that's 2 moves longer than the combined total of Chess Nuts vs Animal Lovers last season)!!! Shock waves from that contest were felt all over the league. In the end, it was Burning Pawns who would take home the Silver Medal. The Grand Finale Game was doubly ironic since the Burning Pawns opened up with an opening named after an Animal, and the Animal Lovers ended up promoting a Pawn. Here's a few links to threads that deal specifically with this game: http://blog.chess.com/view/how-to-tame-your-dragon-or-al-v-bp-101 http://www.chess.com/groups/forumview/final-game-al-vs-burning-pawns The Animal Lovers averaged 41.5 moves (13.83 hours) per game. The interface for vote chess on this site was designed with archives of discussion of both teams. These archives become accessible for all after the game is finished. It is a very useful chess learning tool to see the thinking of people from both teams. In the speed vote form of game it as become common, especially by the more organised teams, to use chat rooms to communicate ideas more quickly. Unfortunately, or fortunately depending on point of view of course , the chess thinking of teams doing this, gets hidden away. Propose, to keep the orginal spirit of vote chess, that from next season links to these chatrooms should become publicly accessible to all. After the game has finished of course.

This is a continuation from group notes about whether databases are allowed or not ... I am sick of getting alerts about "Databases are not cheating but I believe it is" I am responding to you lot chatting about them ... guess its ok for some but not others huh by blackfirestorm666 111 seconds ago Delete lol Donna.... you said don't discuss it here, but you just did yourself... :) G'nut everyone.... have a good day/night... morn/avo, by Chess_Nut 2 minutes ago Well with all due respect this issue has been thrashed out tonnes IN the cheating forum about how a few people think using databases is cheating. It IS in the site rules so it isn't cheating but a few DO hold that belief ... which is fine it is their prerogative but this isn't the place to be chatting about databases is it?by blackfirestorm666 5 minutes ago Delete it is not pertaining to cheating in any way thoughby tournamentguy 10 minutes ago Maybe this discussion is better placed in the cheating forum not in the notes to the fortnightly speed vote chess league?by blackfirestorm666 23 minutes ago Delete "I even hate the use of databases during rated games... but they are legal so I have to shut my mouth on that one" that is the pure essence of CORRESPONDANCE chess. People use this site to play chess in the wrong way, correspondance chess is supposed to be a way to play optimal chess with research, databases, books, all sorts of references. People slap the time limit down to one move and try and make it something it is not. if anything, they should encourage everyone to study opening by tournamentguy 25 minutes ago WOW Johnno.. High 5! I like your thinking... and that is what is is.. thinking for yourself... :D by Chess_Nut 4 hours ago I for one am against the use of ALL databases mainly because computer moves exist in them all.by Panmumu 4 hours ago I am all for databases being used for practice, and study, for unrated games... but not in rated games, important games... study beforehand with them, or after, I have no problem with that.... but I am of a minority, I know that... but have spoken to many who do feel the same... I have been abused too because of my opinion on this... but c'est la vie...by Chess_Nut 13 hours ago and also Conman, I think that only maybe encourages teams to use them themselves? I dunno.... just the word Rykba makes me CRINGE!! I even hate the use of databases during rated games... but they are legal so I have to shut my mouth on that one.... I never stop anyone using them, as I can't if they are legal... by Chess_Nut 13 hours ago

There has been a lot of discussion in the notes lately about what the best way to deal with draws in the playoffs are. Unfortunately, I am so wordy that by the time I have read all the notes (and I really appreciate all the discussion by the way), I have so much I want to say that I can't fit it all into one note. It took 3-4 tries to get the last comment down to 2 notes. So I'm starting this forum so we can discuss this issue in more detail.

It looks like we had 4 teams with 7 points (2-1-1 record). 2 of them made it into the playoffs, and 2 of them didn't. If we didn't have the First Blood System, we'd be playing a whole lot of Tie-Breaker games (6 of them) and the Playoffs would be delayed almost 2 months. There'd be another 4 Tie-Breaker Games if you wanted to sort out the rest of the playoff standings too (2 teams with 12 points (4-0) and 3 teams with 9 points (3-1)). Here are the matchups for the Playoffs in Season 2: Quarter-Finals: 2/1-2/14 #2 Burning Pawns vs #7 Chess Unlimited - February 6th, 14:00 GMT #1 Chess Nuts vs #8 Light Force - February 13th, 12:00 GMT #3 Super Troopers vs #6 Fast Players Group - February 13th, 12:00 GMT #4 Animal Lovers vs #5 Red Army - February 20th, 16:00 GMT #5 Red Army vs #4 Animal Lovers - February 27th, 16:00 GMT Semi-Finals: 2/15-2/28 #3 Super Troopers vs #2 Burning Pawns - February 27th, 13:00 GMT #4 Animal Lovers vs #1 Chess Nuts - March 6th, 13:00 GMT #2 Burning Pawns vs #3 Super Troopers - March 13th, 13:00 GMT Finals: 3/1-3/14 #2 Burning Pawns vs #4 Animal Lovers - March 27th, 14:00 GMT Off-Season: 3/15-4/25Everybody take a break!! Good Luck Everybody!! Have Fun and Don't Time Out!!
Well, since this was the first game of the season, I was going to include some of the comments in with the moves. I even saved the best comment from each move in the Burning Pawns as the game progressed, but with 40 moves, and We Chat Global frequently having 4 pages of comments per move, there's no way I'm taking that much time for this. Even copying and pasting the comments from my half of the game would add a lot of time to doing this. Sorry. I need to get up in the morning to play drums in church. But it was an interesting game (and a very cool title) so I wanted to share it here. Burning Pawns averaged 6.575 votes per move, 9 moves had 100% agreement, and 5 moves were decided by 1 vote or less (Move 19 apparently had some kinda of glitch as the move with the majority of the votes (5/9) did NOT get made and the second place move (4/9) WAS made. We Chat Global averaged 11.4 votes per move, 5 moves had 100% agreement, and 4 moves were decided by 1 vote or less. The game lasted 13 hours 45 minutes. Global Pawns on fire
The Season 2 schedule will look like this: Fortnight 1: 11/9-11/22Fortnight 2: 11/23-12/6Fortnight 3: 12/7-12/20Holiday Break: 12/21-1/3Fortnight 4: 1/4-1/17Fortnight 5: 1/18-1/31Quarter-Finals: 2/1-2/14Semi-Finals: 2/15-2/28Finals: 3/1-3/14Off-Season: 3/15-4/4 Season 2 A B C D E 11/9-11/22 D C B A 11/23-12/6 B A E C 12/7-12/20 E D B A 1/4-1/17 C A E D 1/18-1/31 E D C B Any team in Season 1 automatically gets first dibbs on returning for Season 2 of course, but a number of teams have already withdrawn and/or chosen not to return which leaves room for new teams to join. There is also the possibility of expansion (25 or 30 teams instead of 20 - as long as it's a multiple of 5 we'll be good). The only requirements for competing in the league are simple: 1) The team must have completed at least one Speed Vote Game without timing out.2) The team must have at least 2 admins who are willing to be responsible for league games (1 primary contact, and at least 1 secondary), and at least 1 of them (preferably both) must be a member of the League HQ to receive bulletins, updates, schedules, etc.. I will begin working on the schedule on Monday, October 19th, and have it posted by Monday, October 26th. Therefore, all teams have until Sunday, October 18th to qualify. Here are the teams that are locked in for Season 2: 1. Chess Nuts - (Chess_Kebabs), (NabeelDaSorcerer) 2. Fast Players Group - (mthinker), (CheekyChops0) 3. If you would like your team to be taken seriously, please show that your team can go the distance by finishing a Vote Game at 10-minutes per turn (preferably against one of the other teams that have yet to qualify as well). The Admins in bold are members of the League Headquarters (this group). It stands to reason that anyone who wishes to compete in the league should have the admin in charge as a member of the League Headquarter so that they can receive the necessary news bulletin updates.
