Hey guys! You probably know how to play this, but if you don't, I will explain: In this game, one person names a word, and the next person says a word that has something to do with the previous word; it can be a synonym (i.e. "thin" to "skinny") a part of something (i.e. "tree" to "leaf"), etc. Also, try not to go too many times in a row; preferably wait until two other people go before you go again. Ok, I'll start! chess

Hey everybody! I am going to introduce a new ongoing game that I don't really have a better name for. I have seen a similar game in some groups, but I'm enhancing it just a little. In this game, I start with a word. The next person then either A. subtracts a letter from it to form a new word B. changes a letter to form a new word or C. adds a letter to form a new word. The goal is the keep the word as small as possible, and you cannot repeat a word that someone else has already done. Therefore, the order of operations should be how they are listed above, First, try to subtract a letter to form a still existing word, then if the that doesn't work, try changing a letter to form a still existing word, then if that still fails, add a letter. If you cannot do any, then you may subtract, add, or change two letters, but this is rare. Here is an example game: I start with the word tape. The next person, Samsch, responds with the word tap. He did not change the word to "take" or add a letter to form "taped" because subtracting a letter was possible. The next person, evilchesslord, tries to subtract a letter from "tap" but cannot, since "ta" or "ap" aren't words. So, he changes a letter to form the word map. So on and so on. One more thing to mention: You cannot go twice in a row. Preferably try to wait until two people go before you go again, so that it isn't two people alternating back and forth. This should be fun! Let's get started: start

With little fanfare and much delay, my bad, Guess the Word is back with Game #2. Yes it’s new, but it’s not really improved. RebelDawg is the host after all. Actually there are some changes. The rules follow. Not so many, not so fabulous prizes will be here for the taking. Trophies will be awarded. (1) The host, that’s me (or TheMKWIIPhenom), uses an amazing super-secret process to generate a random “primary” word of at least six letters. The only strict rule is that the word will be contained in the English dictionary at merriam-webster.com. Other parameters will be known only to me, as I dream them up. But seriously, a certain amount of apolitical correctness will be observed. And I won’t choose words like Coup d’etat. It’s not strictly English and it requires accent marks that I don’t know how to enter. Determining other parameters I use may give you an advantage, but that would be telling. I wouldn’t rule out something like “Fianchetto”. The host, me again, reveals the number of letters, the first letter and a point value for a primary word. (2) The player, that’s you, tries to Guess the Word. Each player may post two guesses per day. The first successful post earns the points. (3) A day is defined as the time it takes the host to determine if any gueeses are correct. I will try to keep it as close to 24 hours as I can once we get started. If there have been no successful guesses, a new letter and point value will be revealed. Players post two more guesses and jocularity ensues. (4) At not so random intervals determined by the host, clues for “bonus words”, or phrases, will be revealed. So there will be bonus games within the game. Rules for those will be posted by the host as they happen. (5) This game will end with the winner being the first to earn 21 points. (6) As a disclaimer, the host/I can tweak the rules if there is general consensus and it improves the game. (7) Maroon5fan and TheMKWIIPhenom are the final arbiters for any dispute. TheMKWIIPhenom has graciously volunteered to assist me as guest host. Extra posts with suggestions, comments, images, attempts at humor etc. are welcome. I’ll keep an active leader board as soon as there well… is a leader. RebelDawg

Heyo. I'm playing chess over 2 years now on this site, and I developed quite an agressive style. I'm analysing my games now, and I started to blog and write a little about attacking chess. The second blog is just up, and I'm advertising a little. Check it out: http://www.chess.com/blog/ala_/agressive-amateur-chess-creating-an-upset

Hello everyone! I believe this is an idea that we've needed to implement for a long time. If you want to chat back and forth with someone without using up a bunch of notes, this is the place to go! Other people can also join in on the conversation, and you can talk to someone that isn't currently online! For real live chat with people that are online right then, we are soon going to meet in the Group Chat Room at regular times to chat, schedule live chess games, and have fun! But for the meantime, start chatting here!

Hello all! This is a new game most of you probably know, but if you don't I'll explain: Basically, I'll come up with a thing, (person, place, thing), and you have 20 questions tho guess it. I will answer with Yes, No, Sometimes, and Unknown. My answer should lead you to asking the next question. Well, I've thought of my "thing", so let's get started!

This is a fun, ongoing game by my own invention. I first introduced it in the group The Optimum, where it rapidly gained popularity. Andrewtb then started it in the group Powerful Pawns. Now it's time to introduce it here!! This one, unlike the other two, will be co-hosted by me and andrewtb. Some of the words will be of my choosing, and some will be his! All right, here's how to play: I will reveal some clues to a word, and you will try to guess which word it is! I start by revealing the number of letters it is and the first letter. You all try to guess what the word is. If no one gets it after 24 hours, I will reveal the second letter. Everyone can now guess again. Only one guess per person per day! [EDIT: AS OF MARCH 17, 2013, YOU CAN NOW GUESS TWICE PER DAY INSTEAD OF JUST ONCE. This rule change will remain in effect until futher noted.] Same thing: if no one gets it, I reveal the third letter. On and on until someone gets it, at which point I will start the next word. Every time someone guesses the word, they will earn points. Points awarded will vary based on how many letters were revealed when you guessed it, and how difficult the word is in general. The sooner you guess it, the better! You can win anywhere from 1 point to 8 points! Just like in the Optimum, I will keep an updated Point Leaderboard and Word Archive showing who is winning the game! Sometimes (about every 3-4 words) I will give you a bonus word, which you can guess along with the regular word for a chance to earn more points! I will also occasionally give you special words, which some of you already know what they are, but the rest will have to just wait and find out! Ok, let's get started! This first word is brought to you by andrewtb. It is 5 letters long. The first letter is D So far, we have: D _ _ _ _ Good luck!

Hey everyone! This is the same as the original Letter Game created by Maroon5fan, with the same rules and such, except that instead of trying to make the word as small/large as possible, you try to make a new word using the same letters as the word before and you can add or delete a letter as well. Therefore, you should first try to change the word using the same letters, then if you can't, add/delete a letter then change the word using the remainder of letters. If you need reviewing on the original rules, see the link here. Let's get started! I'll begin with: game

Hello everyone! I am planning a new tournament series, in which each tournament will have a special thematic opening position. (See more information about it, such as the rating ranges and group sizes in the link here.) But, I need you to help decide which openings! Here's how this works: Below is a list of possible thematic openings for the series. Choose your favorite one, the one you want to be made into a tournament. The most popular ones will be chosen to become thematic tournaments! Also, you can suggest your own openings not listed here! You can choose more than one, whichever you think would be best made into a tournament. You can also pick a whole opening (like the Sicilian Defense, for the game to start with 1.e4 c5) or a particular line/variation (like the Sicilian Defense Najdorf Variation English Attack, starting with 1.e4 c5 2.Nf3 d6 3.d4 cxd4 4.Nxd4 Nf6 5.Nc3 a6 6.Be3 ) Remember, these are only suggestions. There are so many chess openings that I could never name them all here. For some openings, such as the Sicilian, there are so many variations and variations to the variations that I've only included the most popular/well known ones. Hey guys! So, this is the place that if you want me to make a special tournament, you can request it here! Want a certain time/move, amount per group or thematic starting postition? Would you like me to create a group tournament for your group? Whatever it is, just tell me here, give me all the details, and I will make the tournament for you! (Unless I get bombarded by tournament requests, then obviously I won't be able to make every single one. ) Also, if you like I will be put your name on the tournament, saying, "brought to you by" or "reqested by" so and so. Let the requests roll in! --M5F

Hey everyone, This is where you tell me which kind of team matches you want, different thematic starting positions, number of players, rating range, etc. I want this group to have what the members want and not just what I want. If you want to request special "regular" tournaments, go to the Tournament Requests thread!
