If you look through the Chess Books and Equipment forum, you will see many opinions on many different sites.
It largely depends on whether or not you want to buy inexpensive plastic sets for a club or fine wooden sets to collect.

Well, here are some thoughts:
1. Official Staunton is a great place. When they shipped to the USA there was never a problem. In fact he only received positive comments on this forum.
2. In the US there are some very good online suppliers.
The Chess House owned and run by Raphael consistently produces very well. This is one of my regular shops.
The House of Staunton has one of the largest inventories available and their quality is high.
The Rochester Chess Center, now run by Shelby Lohrman is also very good.
Chessusa.com is a great place also.
3. Chess Bazaar has also been very good. I own about four sets from them.
Staunton Castle and Chess Empire both used to make sets wholesale for House of Staunton and Official Staunton, so their quality should be good. Both places stopped using them because of them breaking agreements with the retailers. Also there have been some complaints of service problems on this forum.
I bought a set from Chess Empire with no problems.
There are some places that sell things unique to them. Of course there are a lot of copies and duplication by other companies. For instance I have a wood Drueke Players Choice reproduction from The House of Staunton that I use a lot and think it’s great. I also own some of their Frank Camaratta designed sets as some of my favorites.
If I were starting over, I would buy most of my stuff from The Chess House, The Rochester Chess Center, The House of Staunton and Chess Bazaar.
Of course I must mention Gregor and Noj. Their sets are exceptionally good, near to perfect. I would still buy my Dubrovnik sets from them, even with the high prices.
