Very nice! I started noticing them on Etsy just last week, among the many conventional GM1 sets. Definitely a much more compelling design! I think they’re more refined than the regular GM1 knights as well.

Some Soviet Laughing Knights…

And Soviet Ferocious Knights:

Great question, Wandel! In fact, each copied a different version of the original set. OS copied Jon Crumiller’s captain’s set, which came with an enhanced coffer and one of the tables used at the Olympiad. HOS copied a set gifted to a member of the Scottish team, which came with a simpler coffer and no table. There are a few minor differences in the versions of the pieces of design. Each company made a faithful reproduction of the sets they copied.

Beautiful

Hello Eva and all,

How would you classify the following knights? Sometimes it's not so clear whether they are angry and ferocious or happily laughing! Too bad we can't ask them! grin.png

This should be from a BF I set, early 1930s (is it a Menchik knight?)

While the following is, as far as I know, from a late tsarist set:

Anyway, regardless of their mood, both are beautiful, IMHO!

Yeah, some knights look both ferocious and laughing. The knights of my Soviet Droplet set below are arguably more laughing, but I can’t help but see them as ferocious llamas.

In terms of their attitude, I see ferocious knights in several sets including BFI, although technically the ferocious knights refer to the knights of a specific set (as do the laughing knights). Below is the main archetype of this set (from the collection of Chuck Grau), although there are some variations.

The Menchik knights are from c. 1935 BFII sets, not BFI.

And I love the grim grins of some of those Tsarist knights!

This is all Eva's fault! wink Her love for the Soviet designs is infectious and I finally gave into the temptation (mainly for the cute knights!).

Haha nice! From what year is your set? I’m curious to see one of these smaller Mordovian sets in person one day. I like those crown caps on the queens. Also interesting how long your bishop miters are! I haven’t seen that before.

And yeah, attractive and cute knights in your set!

The seller (along with a stamp on the inside of the box) indicate 1963. King height is 70mm, so the knights are short and cute! wink

Italfama set I believe, I don't know what they were thinking, perhaps this is a knight's helmet?

Post-engagement, I'm guessing. tongue

The photo of the knights with the purple floral background. Am I the only one that gets the impression they look as though they are singing? You could almost make a Holiday meme from the way their mouths are carved.
