Or DGT Timeless (or the upcoming HoS "Queen's Gambit Inspired Chess Set")?

SnowWhite2003

Hi bry and lotsoblots! It was a Gibsons chess set and wasn't expecting much but it's actually lovely and the pieces are weighted so has a nice feel to them. They are Staunton style.

The chess board is a Victorian table that hubby got me for Christmas. Wasnt very expensive but I love it.

Years ago me and my then fiance now husband used to make chess men and boards. We bought those moulds that you pour the mixture into. We sold a few too although the boards were a bit dodgy lol.

I absolutely loved the Queens Gambit and it reignited my interest in chess again.

Hubby bought me Chess for Dummies book as the way I usually play is on a wing and a prayer!

Thanks Snow. Ditto Queen's Gambit!

Hell all! I’m a newbie here. I inherited the below chess set from my late grandfather and wondered if anyone can help date and identify it? My grandma thinks they picked it up in Yugoslavia on a trip there some 30 years ago. Regardless of the age and origin I love it 😊 and is a nice memory of my grandad.

Thanks in advance. Louis.

These sets were made in Poland but were also sold in Yugoslavia.

Wow, that's really beautiful! I'm afraid I have no clue how old it is, but I hope someone finds out so I can find the same product and buy it tongue.png

This form is actually pretty common on ebay, it's available in many colors, and I've even seen them decorated with woodburning designs:

Unfortunately, I can't say anything about @Idi6678's historic set happy.png

I'm also pretty sure it's Polish, made by the Wiegel factory. They still make very similar sets today.

I have been collecting older Finnish chess sets. Most of them are at least 50 years old. You can see typical short and fat pawns and coarse knights. These five sets are all different, but still share the typical features.Old finnish chess sets

I picked up a couple durable-ish, inexpensive sets this winter. I hadn't really played since I was young, and like everyone else I am catching chess-fever again. Seems like wood-grained pieces are the thing nowadays, but I still just like black.

First is the House of Staunton Hungarian on a Rechapados Ferrer 55mm "standard" walnut board. The Hungarian set is very well manufactured and presents well if you are into the unique looks. I prefer the piece spacing on this 55mm board as opposed to my tournmanet 2.25" vinyl. Subtle but noticeable difference.

Second is a House of Staunton Liberty Series set. This one is also quirky, which I particularly like. The manufacturing isn't quite as good here. In fact, I am trying to get a replacement for one of the ebonized bishops. The boxwood pieces are much less uniform in color as well. I don't know if that is regarded as good or bad, but it is noticeable.

ozymad1as,

Agreed, the Hungarian is a better fit on the 55mm board. I have the CB version of this set with a 1.57" diameter king that I use with a 2" board.

Love, Love the Romanian/Hungarian set. This is my favorite modern Eastern European Staunton design. It is a hybrid design which I love the most. I have a Crimson Red Boxwood version from RCM. I use it on a 57mm/2.25" board. It fits well enough. 50-55mm squares does the job too.

Strangemover

This is my only set. It's nothing special but I like it.

Do you have any boards with Padauk that have darkened? I'm curious to see what the deep burgundy would look like. I recently purchased one, yet to be shipped, and I'm wondering if it would be too problematic with contrast.

Not by much. Chess pieces seem to darken more over time than boards, based on my experience with four Padauk sets. I've owned this 2.5" Padauk and Northern Ash board for over five years.

Contrast this with the 2-1/8" Bloodwood and Maple board on top.

And a 2" Bloodwood and Northern Ash.

I was thinking of starting an organization and calling it "chess without borders!"
