What board/piece colors do you prefer?

Sort:

I know that red and black boards are terrible for the eyes. What color board and pieces work best for you? Also, why do all tournaments use the green/white boards? Is this the best color combination for the eyes to relax? Let's hear your thoughts, please.

The green/white combo is mostly an American convention but can be seen in euroland and elsewhere.

G/W is pretty easy on the eyes and is a favorite of mine. I have some wooden boards and the brown woods + maple are nice too.

I prefer black and blond pieces but brown and blond is great too. One of my good sets is a plastic (HOS set) in red and off-white.

So long as it's not crazy kid-friendly colors it's all good.  (So long as it's not black pieces on black squares).

I think (but I'm not sure) that G/W boards are used for not confusing the dark pieces with the dark squares (for example a dark pawn into a dark square)...aswell green is a colour that relax yourself, operating theatres are green and the surgeon's clothe for this reason.

These are the conclusions I arrived after asking myself the same question...XD

Sorry for my English

"surgeon's clothe for this reason."

I believe that is not true, they choose green because the bloodstains show up least reddish on them. Opposite colors in the spectrum.

Pajarillo

You can be right but what do you think about blackboards?

I think is for relaxing

Not sure to be honest. If you're colorblind you probably won't enjoy those boards with green on them much. Personally on the screen I use white/blue as in Fritz. In real life my board is brownish/ ivory-blond. Personally for real life, I like that combination best. But that could be because that's just what i'm used too.

I went shopping for pieces and a roll up board and ended up with 2 kinds of green/white boards...a vinyl and a mousepad. The pieces I got were the Zurich series from USCF (black and natural) and this is a heavy set! The pieces are really nice to look at, too. Between the boards, the vinyl is a lot better looking (grn/wht) and the pieces slide nicely on the board. The mousepad is kind of green/grey and just don't care for it. The mousepad surface is spongy and the pieces don't slide at all.

So if anyone is shopping online, there's a difference in board material to consider and you really have to see for yourself what you prefer.

It's hard to keep the pieces from falling off a blackboard cry.png

Something along the line of these photos from Chessbazaar's Russian Era set which I just obtained. Natural woods are easy on the eyes for a standard chess game which could run up to 2 hours of play or more. Walnut/maple for boards and boxwood, golden rosewood (sheesham) for pieces.

Here on chess.com I use a blue/white board.

The theme is "Lolz".

Another vote for natural woods, pieces and board. Having said that, I love my crimson stained Romanian-Hungarian tournament set, although I could do with a darker board to go with it.

As do I but I had to "seal" the crimson stained boxwood pieces with a clear gloss lacquer when I obtained my set last year from ChessBazaar. They have discontinued this buff polished version but still sell the lacquered crimson version on their website. Extremely durable with no delicate points to break during rough handling or dropping to floor & a joy to  play with. The photo shows my result of applying the spray clear gloss lacquer finish to the set.

Notice how it looks on this board with the finish I had applied and the two photos before the clear gloss lacquer was applied with the set on the same board. One heck of a difference!

I like gold & silver metal pieces on dark wood board.

I like my pieces and board to be similar in color. My NOJ Tal set is my favorite in that respect ... nullnull

Metal chess can also be very attractive. I have a 1900 Marshall Jaques metal set which is a real joy to play with.

You can buy very nice vintage boards from: 1. Chess Antique shop 2. House of Staunton 3. Chessmonarch.com 4. Honeyluke

I have bought stunning chess sets and boards from them and they are a real gem.

Please show some pictures.  And otherwise give real evidence that you are not the person that has been banned at least 2 times from this forum, last known as Stauntonmaster.

Ah, so now you are showing that you really are the person that was on this forum as Stauntonmaster.

So be it.  I believe the administrators will now be made aware of this.  Good bye.

And some of the most gorgeous are the boards from Official Staunton that are made in Italy, just beautiful.

For solid colors, I think I like medium to light blue the best.  It seems easiest on my eyes.  I have tried many color combinations, and this is the one I come back to most often.  I do insist on 4 different colors, though, so a natural to buttercream yellow for the white pieces contrasts nicely with white squares, and black contrasts nicely with light blue.  Very high contrast and visibility.

I must admit to liking red pieces and boards as well, though they aren't quite as easy on the eyes, they are still attractive to me.

This is my favorite solid color board, it's just a little too dark for good contrast with the black pieces, which I find particularly problematic since the white pieces contrast a little too well (once again the buttercream yellow of the new Ultimate sets).  I have some other sets that look nice on this board, I'm just really into using my new Ultimate set these days.

My preference is boxwood for the light pieces, and sheesham, rosewood, or padauk for the dark pieces ("I don't need no stinkin' black pieces"). For chessboards, I prefer maple or ash for the light squares and walnut, padauk or bloodwood for the dark squares ("Don't need no stinkin' black squares either"). Examples below.
