on another note, I believe HoS will be coming out w/ their own version of an 1849 replica. The photos I saw looked very good. However, if the price I saw was correct, HoS will be retailing a club-size set at $3999.... Yikes.

Hi Frank, Where did you see the pictures?

I'll quickly have a look. I saw then as well but couldn't find them earlier today.

Found them...

yes, there it is. Not sure this page is actually linked from anywhere on their site. It was up briefly on their "NEW" section and then removed, so I suspect this set is not officially released yet.

My choice for Staunton Chess set of the year is the HoS Fischer-Spassky Commemorative, otherwise known as the Pawn Sacrifice, set.  I own this set in both Ebonized and Golden Rosewood.

Understand that I play USCF rated chess games with all my sets.  The criteria I use includes the look and design of the set, but also how the set is balanced in the hand when playing.  The balance includes the weight and feel of the piece while holding it to move the piece on the board.

I played a rated game this past Monday evening with the Ebonized version and my opponent, 2 or 3 adult friends and members of the club and I all agreed this set is exceptional during a game in play.

A set does look and feel differently if you are sitting at the table/board playing than standing.

The HOS 1849 set looks similar to  Official Staunton's 1851 set ($350).

Yes. But the HOS set has leather pads, kingside stamping, and a Manufacturer's mark on the base of the King, so that would explain the higher price... :)

Frank, Official Staunton's 1851 set also has kingside stamping

you're right. Totally forgot... I was only kidding about this anyway - I think the HoS set's price is outrageous.

Alright, here's a serious question.  Does Official Staunton use the same manufacturer(s) as House of Staunton?

Are the sets identical in all ways between the two companies?

To wit, HoS sold a York Series a year ago that is identical to the OSC Morphy set in design, weight and dimensions.

The Fischer Spassky set of both companies also look very similar:

HoS version:

The Official Staunton version:

The rooks look different but that could be due to a different camera angle.  Otherwise the other pieces look the same.

And now we have the 1849 sets by each company looking an awful lot alike.

Is this a coincidence or more than that?

Of course the Official Staunton prices are less expensive.

None.

All of them are overpriced as hell.

HoS sells a set for $150. Pieces are made in india. I have family there.

Visit warehouse and buy for $20.

Take that HoS.

Would be great to visit a warehouse in India and buy $300 sets for $20 if you can but the air fare and hotel would cost me $2,400.  Surprised
