Andy, it is not cheating if you comply with that site's rules and structure. I used to play postal chess years ago then gave up through life changes. When I heard about computerised postal chess I was intrigued - when I heard that some sites allow - encourage even - computer aid I was totally shocked. I am not a fan of playing against the things, certainly not of using one to play for me or "with me". What I do understand though is that, from what posters here and elsewhere have said, there is more to it than just telling the pc to give you the next best 20 moves - this would tell you what it proves, namely that they are good at that format of chess. Regardless of how it works that is what they allow there - I certainly won't be joining it but gl to them. Maybe it strengthens their game as they are analysing in depth with the aid of something that in most respects will be more talented. If I didn't despise mechanical thinking aids other than as tools to type and send my emails, I would probably appreciate a top level mentor to go over ideas with.
Best drawing weapon against 1. e4?

Hm...sounds like that thing Kasparov was talking about way back when (Advanced Chess or whatever he called it).

Nobody is saying D5, but it has a quite straightforward, easy-to-understand system behind it, virtually creating drawish positions.

By the way, I accepted the challenge from Francisco for those that are interested in seeing if I can prove the draw. I'll post my thoughts after the game finishes.

Quite look forward to that. Have living proof that you can loose playing Russian without any problem. Did it myself plenty of times. Have to admit that I did not know at the time that it guaranteed a draw.

So it is not Automatic when you play Petroff that you get 1/2 point?
1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nf6 3.d4 no draw

Firebrandx, i would have expected that you computer whizzkids would allow the older generation some fun. I would honestly not understand why the Petroff would offer better drawing chances than caro-kan or scandinavian etc.. But as they say : never to old to learn.

By the way Firebrandx, if you continue like this, we will have to report you and your computer for cheating :-)
For some reason I was thinking AndyClifton meant this defense:
Might be a bit obscure.
Gotcha.
