Budapest Gambit problem

I recently tried the Budapest Gambit against someone and instead going through the main line, the person moved his queen out attacking my knight.

Qd4 is just bad as it gives black equality in what was a nice opening for white. With Bf4 white wins in 69% of games. QD4=.

I've had this (and derivatives) a few times:

4.Qd4 plays into Black's hands.

Either 4.Bf4 or 4.Nf3 Bc5 5.e3 (as suggested by GM Kiril Georgiev in his excellent "Squeezing the Gambits" book) are much preferrable.

Greymiles thank you for posting this in the forums.  I'm glad I saw it here instead of getting surprised with it on the board.

Yeah, but what if he ignores d6, and attacks my Knight by h3? Nvm, I can simply take the pawn.

why is Qd4 so bad no one has yet to actually give a reasonable line of play explaning why ?

You should never move your queen out too early in the game.

1. Read the chess fundamentals.

2. Use your brain.

3. If none of the above helps, then search for a game Beliavsky- Epishin, Reggio Emilia 1991.

4. If that is not enough either, then start playing another game.

Hi, I sometimes play the Budapest and rarely see this over the board, here are a few ideas that might be of interest, I must admit though that I find it difficult to play and the knight on e5 always seems to be out of place, I had bad results OTB but to be fair,it was mostly V higher graded opponents, and I did enjoy playing the Budapest, good luck:

White has a strong advantage especially in the Budapest Gambit he gives that advantage away with QD4 in the Budapest the two bishops are very powerful for white here the game gives the pair little time to develop as the queen is forced to move back and forth. When blacks KNc6 forces the queen back to QD1 is a wasted move in my opinion. (Besides the IM above me says so).

thanks for the game refrence but white wasted a move more than nesscary with Qe4+ and kept it there making it a little misplaced so this doen't fit the bill for refuting 4.Qd4  but post #19 seems like a better take a look.

Ah, yes, you are right! That brilliant Qd1-d4-d1 trick refutes the Budapest... Surprised

OK, try to improve White's play on the following:

Easy to find an improvement- no?

Did you apply my tip #1, or not?
