Caro-Khan is the most Strong Defence?

This topic is so that you can post your opinions if caro-khan is in fact the best defense against any white move in the first move. In my opinion: Yes, it is the best defense. However, it is often necessary to accept a passive and slow game, which leads almost 95% of players (amateurs) to give up on it before even trying to understand it.

its clear amateur's opinion will tell you the truth when top player play Caro Kann occasionnally.

But i guess top players don't want to play such a fantastic weapon, it would be too easy!

Please limit yourself to serious responses. The world already has enough irony.

A serious answer is that there is no such thing. This is something that high level players know and that low level players always ask about. The differences between openings is small and comes down to which you like the best.

Well, against the Reti opening and Queens Gambit you reach the structures that you want anyway. Obviously not wise to always just blindly play c6 though.

I love the Caro-Kann but it's probably not the strongest defence. In fact... it's hard to know what is. I think the Caro-Kann is good enough that the top level players keep it in their repertoire but it's not something they play every chance they get.

Maybe one day when Chess is closer to being solved(goodluck with that) we might know what the best is. I am honestly glad we don't know.

I wouldn't be surprised if in 50 years the CK replaces the Berlin and any Sicilians as the best response.

Why do you think that? Opening theory is pretty well established right now. The only reason they might switch is because everything gets dull or theory gets too deep in something else.

Best response is irrelevant in most cases, but that’s true especially below the GM level. Computers hate the Dutch and they don’t much care for the King’s Indian Defense. If you know every line of an inferior opening that is rarely played, your opponents will not be as often prepared for it, and you will win a lot of games. Humans aren’t computers. You can outprepare a human, but you can’t an engine. Engines may do badly with the KID, but Fabi won today with it as black, and so it shall always be.

For those who think the Caro-Kann is dull and boring, this game was recently played, a few days ago: Caro-Kann between the current two strongest engines on the planet (Stockfish and Lc0). 3600 vs. 3600:

Owen’s and Nimzo getting wrecked by both sides. Still no French yet.
Avatar of TestPatzer

Yeah. It's a tough match. And I'm actually surprised that no French games have appeared yet, now that you mention it. I'm assuming at least one pair will happen soon.
