Is 1..g6 always playable?

@Zac_howland - I suppose you didn't bother visualizing his variation past move 1.

If you did, you'd see that

(1) 2.c4?? hangs the e4 pawn, so black can stop the "center duo" with 2...Nxe4, without the other garbage.

(2) 3...d5?? hangs a pawn, because the recapture

(3) 4...Nxd5?? hangs a piece, although it's nothing compared to

(4) 5.e4, which is an illegal move.

That typo is quite an important one, which he seems oblivious to...

Now you want to talk transpositions into the Alekhine's.  Stop wasting my time.  Post about the central pawn duo and Black attempting to destroy it.

I was talking about your asinine example of a rebuttal.

So, I've got a typo in my move sequence.  You know what the right move is.  You brought the example.

Stop splitting hairs.  Black is challenging White to keep him from creating a central pawn duo.  Period end of story.

^The issue is, he's confused, since 1.e4 Nf6 is a perfectly logical sequence, and the illegal move doesn't come until 5.

However, the pawn duo is already established in the Gruenfeld, and black wants to target those pawns for attack, or at least immobilize them on bad squares.

You confuse a lot of people on this site.  But you won't confuse me.  Don't believe me let's play an OTB game face to face.  I will even play you 2 in a simul OTB.  What state do you live in.  The next time there is a tournament worth going to in your state.  I will make arrangements to meet you.  There  is your challenge.  Now the pucker factor begins for you 2.

According to the database I'm looking at...this is pretty even...white has only a slight edge.

It's perfectly playable. White gets an advantage, but club players (and masters sometimes too) often get ahead of themselves and their beautiful center crumbles. Pirc/Modern, Grunfeld, Alekhine's Defense, KID, QID, Nimzo-Indian, KIA, Nimzo-Larsen, Benko, etc... All examples of hypermodern strategy, all successful to varying degrees depending on who is playing it. If hypermodernism was busted, people wouldn't employ it, especially masters.

Can g6 by black be automatically played in response to any white opening move without getting an opening disadvantage?

There are systems that can be played against anything.

But since the opponent can do anything, it greatly increases the level of strategic / technical knowledge needed to be successful with that opening. So even though systems are attractive to beginners they're not necessarily a good choice.

The Nimzo, QID, KID and Grunfield are good. The rest are not.

Alekhine should roll over in his grave reprimanding U! grin.png

If you are going to be at the USOpen in Norfolk Virginia between July 29 -Aug. 6.  please let me know what day and time you  would like to meet at the  frontt desk of the Sheraton.  Or if your are not going to be there.  Tell me what tournament and date you would like to meet and where for an OTB Game 120.  No more talk.

Could you explain why the pirc isn't good? Just an amateur player here but I've tried out pirc and it seems kinda solid? So whats the main refutation to it?

Also, is the Alekhine considered bad because black loses tempo due to his knight being chased around?

@jengaias:

I have waited the  customary 1/2 hr. for a  response to  my challenge to you.

I guess you are all just talk and hot air.  I other hand, am ready to have a theoretical discussion with you over the board.

Once again I issue the challenge for an OTB game between you and me.  Face to face.

If you are not 11 , then you obviously need therapy.

Everything you said is nonsense , and beating me OTB won't change that.

Now there are 2 possible senarios:

If you are 11 or under, then you will grow up and you will realise that a nonsense is a nonsense no matter what.

If you are over 11 , then you need help.

You are a chess engine chicken.  I don't think you have any OTB experience.  If you come out from behind your chess engine you are a weak wood pushing patzer.  And, you are afraid that I will crush you like  the proverbial grape.

When I was 11 my father took me to the student union on the campus of the University of Florida.  A chess Master by the name of Charles Musgrove was holding a 35 board simultaneous exhibition.   I mated him in 14  moves.  He was a professional about it.  He explained to his assistant what went wrong.   And, then moved on to the  next board to continue with his exhibition.

Unlike you who is being a total moron.

I am challenging to a theoretical discussion of  the very issue we are disagreeing about.

If you think yoou are going to save face by attacking me personally.  You are sadly delusional.

So, once again, are you a chess engine chicken?  Or are you going to accept my challenge?  All

the chess.com members following this topic are waiting...

oh, I am trembling, 2200.   Everything I know about chess was taught to me by GM Ron Henley and NM Gary Sanders.  For a while Ron and I lived together in Orlando.    Check their ratings in Chess Life Magazine.  My rating is pretty close to theirs in the 2400's.  In case you don't know who GM Ron Henley is.  He was selected by World Chess Champion to be his second for the 1990 New York WCC match against Garry Kasparov

You are still trying to duck this challenge.   And, the "fight, fight" rumblimgs on chess.com are growing louder and louder.  Pretty soon most of chess, com members on line will be looking in to see what's going on.  So, far it looks like jengaias is chickening out.

Enough sabre rattling.  I'm calling Bullsh*t.

You don't  know what you're talking about  regarding hypermodernism.   This is my last post.  I won't allow an ignoramus like you to waste my time or anyone else's.

You're seriously asking someone from Greece to meet you in person for a grudge match? You know it's never going to happen.

Just play a game online. The engine excuse shows that you're the one who's afraid. There have been *many* grudge matches on chess.com, and none of them have involved engine use of any sort.

BTW, my rating is actually 2400 USCF, and I trained with GM Larry Kaufman since I was a kid. I'm not verifying my NM title on chess.com since it's too much hassle, and I'd rather just write repeatedly how I'm strong and I trained with masters.

This is all true since I wrote it online wink.png

Name the tournament jengaias.  What city? what date? what time?  Any other reasons you can't play.  Remember most of chess.com is watching.
