Learning the openning

I'm in the process of learning overtures and would like some advice on how to optimize my learning. I'm learning the London opening and I think I've understood the main principles, but there are so many variations that I'm wondering how useful it is to master an opening. Thanks for the answers ; )

Learning/mastering opening principles is more important than learning a specific opening, but once you know principles learning some openings is a good idea.
