I have looked at my overall game and have found my main weakness is the opening game. Does anyone have any suggestion on what book I should get to read and study. What other ideas are out there for improving this part of my game.

Ruben Fine's book  "The Ideas Behind the Chess Openings."

It goes into the theory and isn't too heavy.  It helps you understand some of the main theoretical lines behind the major openings.

As a beginner, is there a particular opening i should work on?   I need to improve in all areas of my game, just wondered if i start learning openings if there was a particular one that beginners could/should learn to use.

In my opinion, no. You should learn the basic principles behind the openings and try to apply them in each and every game. I second the recommendation of "Ideas Behind the Chess Openings" - excellent book to start learning about opening play.

I have had good use of "King's Gambit fro the creative attacker" by my countryman Thomas Johnsson. I think Quality chess books are about to release a new book on KG

Some good suggestions here...I have read a few of the titles that have been suggested. However, by far my favorite two books on chess openings are "Chess Openings for White, Explained" and "Chess Openings for Black, Explained".  This series is written by GM's Lev Alburt, Roman Dzindzichashvili, and GM Eugene Perelshteyn (He was an IM at the time of the writing).  It really goes in depth into several different commonly played openings such as the Sicilian, French, Caro-Kann, Scandanavian etc. They recommend specific lines and explain why they are good.  A must read for anyone over 1200 that wants a complete repertoire of openings.
