Philidor defence - Help me learn

Thanks again! I am also trying to play it against 1. d4:

White just resigned, what is black's plan in this position? (which looks good to me, and clearly to my opponent)

Edit: I can see that black wins a pawn with b4, but what would be the plan if that was not the case?

BirdsDaWord

I believe against d4 setups it is referred to as the Old Indian.

But it still works, right?

BirdsDaWord

Yes, I presume there are differencs since the Old Indian typically has c4 in it, and not necessarily e4.

Pretty cool game I just played:

If you like it that much, you ought to just take up ...d6 as a universal defensive system.  Honestly, if you "play" it right, you could also throw these ideas into work with White, with something like this:

I like openings that are based of ideas, and not particular lines, such as this 1.. d6 stuff! I love it. But it won't be my only move, but it will be my main move for the time being so that I can learn it.

As white, I somehow are getting into Nf3 c4 stuff, and which gives white some chance of advantage from the opening. So it probably will only be for my black side of chess.

BirdsDaWord

If you like ...d6, I am not sure if you are keeping up with Naka - he plays it a lot as his main blitz weapon.

I also recall that Kasparov once stated the value of 1. d3 as a blitz weapon, I believe.  You might even look into some of these ideas.

This game was really exciting, white went all-out on kingside, but I defused his attack, and went a rook up.

PS: I couldn't play OTB today as my opponent called in sick

It might also break down the Stonewall!

Who said that Philidor isn't exciting?

in your game against Messier, u were a bit outplayed...

Instead of his Rf7, one square further with Rxf8 leads to mate :

32.Rxf8 Rxf8 33.Bxg7 Kxg7 34.Qe7 and Qh7 mate will follow.

U just show victories because u win all or u don't want to show your defeats?

When I have lost from this opening it either is because of a stupid blunder and not from the opening I think, feel free to mock me at will (so that I can learn). And I didn't see that line you gave. You are right.

Just look at this game (that I lost), I got a pawn from the opening and just played miserably afterwards:

i dont know where u did a blunder in your game against Messier.

He played very well and u had not a chance.

He missed 21.Nh6+ i think, and again after missing Rxf8 playing Rf7, he could do it the next move.

"feel free to mock me at will", where did u see i mocked u?

I think your plan with Bd7 and Rfb8 was wrong.

And i don't understand exd4 idea if u don't make pressure on e file. For instance, instead of Ne5, why not Re8 and Nc5?

Or maybe Ne5, but then b6 with idea Ba6.

I didn't say that you were, but that you could if you wanted to so that I could know what I do wrong.

See now I learned that I am supposed to give pressure on the e-file when I do exd4. (Re8 and Nc5)

Also I learned the b6 Ba6 idea after Ne4, if I chose to do that

The Philidor is a great, flexible weapon. I don't want to play any more games agianst you!
