The Catalan

After watching GM Georg Meier's current videos on the Catalan, it really has made me want to start playing it since I've never  had an opening with white. However, I have always been an e4 player, and I'm hesitant to switch. So, any Catalan players out there that want to tell me how they score with the opening? The opening looks very appealing to play, but I don't know how people that aren't GMs score with it.

Catalan has very high scores and is played by top guns. Kramnik is said to be the greatest expert on the Catalan.

Anyhow you should not look for openings with the highest score rates but for openings that lead to positions which suit your playing style best.

If you like closed position with positional play than Catalan is a very good choice. A "pawn pusher" like me feels at home in such positions.Laughing

A player who prefers open positions with high activity of all pieces and much tactical play should better play e4 and go for open or semi-open systems.

Ding Liren is pretty good with the Catalan. maybe you should check him out. I remember a game Ding vs Carlsen Tata Steel where Ding got a pleasant position from the opening, but inaccuracies in the middlegame deprived him of the full point

The Catalan is a great system for white, played at the top levels. It must be a very sound opening, even though I've never played it once.

My impression is that even under the master level, or around the weak master level, white has much easier play than black. The positions just look very comfortable.

I'd probably rank it as similar to the Nimzo-Indian in terms of solidness and playability - basically top tier opening, and there's a fair number of options you have.

I've never been a d4 player. And @Enjel, you're right. I've been looking at some GM games and play does seem a lot easier for white. And @Pooh, I am interested in the Catalan because it just seems like a very comfortable opening.

I have just started playing Catalan and am finding it very solid. I have hardly got into any bother as white, some simple material wins on the g2-a8 diagonal vs weaker players, some games vs stronger players where i cant work out how to make progress/create pressure and it becomes a fairly dull drawish position.

Of course you'll need something for dutch, benoni, and KID players too.

And maybe rare stuff like d4 d5 c4 Bf5 and the englund gambit.

I know, of course, just the same way that with e4 you have to have something against the Scandinavian, Caro Kann, French, Sicilian, etc etc.

I've thought about switching from e4 to d4, but I feel like it's a lot to learn.

I guess I don't know much about the Catalan, but I assume it's solid and straightforward enough that you could start playing it right away.

I know this isn't about lines, but here's a trap I fell for twice (years apart). Luckily the 2nd time my opponent changed the move order, but if he had played this way I would have fallen for it again.

If I do end up taking up the Catalan as my main opening, which I think I will, I won't play it exclusively. It will make me more unpredictable when preparing vs me, plus, I like to play against certain openings like the French to name one, so if I know someone plays the French, I will play e4 vs them.
