What's your favourite opening?

Yes; diverting black's e pawn to build a stronger centre with a move like d4, Nf3 or Bc4. Helps white's development and black might weaken their kingside a little as well if they want to support their pawn. Nice.

BTW, the favorite chess opening for ERIK (chess.com CEO) is THE GLEK, according to this answer in the thread below.
My question: was him trolling or there is an opening named THE GLEK?

WOW!! HE was not trolling:

I never would've thought that it was a variation of the Four Knights Opening. I looked at that, and I was honestly thinking "I'm pretty sure there's no such thing" but were we wrong. I'm gonna be thinking about this all Knight... I am really sorry for the pun.

Such an overrated question.
If I had to declare a specific "favorite", it would probably be the Taimanov Sicilian as it's the opening that comes up most frequently that I play from both sides (no matter what your repertoire is, there will always be a minimum of one opening, strange as it may be, that you have to play from both sides - for bulletchessJOHN, that would be the Grob - what stops White from playing it when he has Black?).
That said, I tend to get my best results in the following:
White: Advance French, Exchange Spanish, Sicilian Prins Variation (2...d6 w/ 5.f3 intending 6.c4), Pirc Austrian Attack, King's Indian Attack vs Sicilian w/ 2...e6 (You can reach a Taimanov against me if you play 2...Nc6 and 4...e6, no Kan though).
Black: Old Indian, Taimanov Sicilian, c3-Sicilian, Closed Sicilian, Sicilian Grand Prix

If you don't have a favourite that is ok. There are so many openings, most of which can be effective when put into play. I just prefer openings that sprout from 1. e4 e5.

I love the Danish Gamibit!
I was leting the computer look at a game and it said my opponent had used it and so i gave it a look and fell in love. With it it's so agressive and if an opponents not on their toes it can be nasty!
yours ever,
Thayne Thomas Keele

I have to say french. (for black) it blocks the center, and is a bit cramped, but black holds lots of counter attacking chances

Yes. I can see how the Danish Gambit would be good for natural development. If black is to accept the gambit after 1. e4 e5 2. d4 exd4 3. c3 then that would leave white able to develop pretty much all of his pieces before black.

And yes I've never played the French; 1. e4 e6 2. d4 d5. The opponent can go for the closed position which is something I fear, as well as the development on the light bishop being a bit awkward though white's pawn chain could be broken by c3 at any time. I know that there is the French Defence Exchange Variation as well. I should try it out
My favourite opening is the Spanish Opening/Ruy Lopez and all of the variations thereof:
...because I find it is a fine way to develop your minor pieces - a fundamental tactic - and a good way to place pressure on black's pieces from the start. It also allows easy, early castling from the start of the game to divert your king from the centre of the board, and we all know why you should castle. Lots of variations sprout from the Spanish Opening, such as the Berlin Defence (3. Nf6), Morphy Defence (3. a6), Classical Variation (3. Bc4) or the Alapin Variation (3. Bb4).
For me the Italian Game is also an opening I like. I have played this opening a lot of times as well:
...because the c4 bishop signifies an attack on black's weak f2 pawn, which is a fine move as this is also a natural way to develop the light bishop and place pressure onto black's pieces, much like the Spanish Opening. It is also a nice way to allow easy, early castling. Some variations from the Italian Game as well, such as the Giuoco Piano (3. Bc5), Two Knights Defence (3. Nf6) or the Hungarian Defence (3. Be7).
