Which opening should I learn first?

I'be been doing a lot of tactics and puzzles on this application and others because it was suggested for a new comer to do so. Now I feel like I am comfortable enough in situations that require tactics and thinking to get past. My main problem right now is that I can no longer rely on the basic principles of openings (control centre, develop your pieces, castle etc). So my question to you all is as follows: what is a good, sound opening to study for white and for black? I'd prefer if the openings would help me improve as a player and increase my chess knowledge. It would also be nice if a few books or videos are suggested relating to to the opening.

1.e4 e5 and 1.d4 d5.

Why : they are natural and teach more than anything. And playable at beginner's level to world championship.

U can find many material on chess.com (video, articles...).

highly recommend starting with 1. e4 or 1. d4 for white. playing solid sidelines or systems is good as long as you understand the ideas behind them. for black, aim for defenses that offer simple pawn structures and active piece play. QGA, Tarrasch Defense, Rubinstein French Defense, all are good choices to study. books I recommend are "FCO" by Paul van der sterren and "Understanding the chess openings" by Sam Collins.

I don't know if you've ever done something like this. Difficult to get all the pieces perfectly in their positions without interacting without the opposing side at all, though.
