I thought he was a jerk for saying some of the things he said. Traitor? No. Eccentric jerk? Yes. Insane? No. I honestly don't know where the insanity claim comes from.
Do Americans still admire/like/love Fischer after his 9/11 sayings?
Fisher lives and breaths chess. He has no life outside of the chess board.
I am 70 years and watched him come up too the Grandmaster he is.
I live in NYC. He beliveds what he reads in the left media. He should stick to the chess board. NYPD are the best in the U.S.A.

P.S. Happy New Year to all of the Chess.Com players.
I think hating someone because they said something bad about your country is petty.
Just like elevating Fischer to hero status during the cold was was petty.
But people are petty, what can you do.
Like most people I admire his chess, but not so much the person.

Not if your skin is dark, that's for sure.

Gotta understand that police officers have to make difficult decisions.
Put it in terms of your own job. If you made the wost possible decision in performing your job it's not like you'd go to jail or even be fired.
Oh wait...

LOL.
50 years ago MLK made a speech where he said that he was dreaming of a day when men would be judged not by the color of their skin but by the content of their character. That day has long since arrived, and some don't like it.
No need to judge based on skin color when you can judge people based on their badge and blues.
+1 Absolutely.
Imagine for a second what it's like for these cops to have to police neighborhoods and people who are willing to burn down their own businesses over a FELON who, after failing to obey a lawful order from a POLICE OFFICER, decided to attack said officer and ended up being shot for his trouble. Imagine that!! - a cop shooting a thug in the process of attacking him.

well yeah...people with good character are judged to be weak
Yes that too.
I work with a 19 year old kid who's black and just got his RN license (registered nurse). I can tell you he's one of the finest young men I've ever had the pleasure of knowing. We work in a nursing home/rehab setting and the residents/patients/coworkers love him.
He told me one of his biggest obstacles in life was the other kids "of color" in his classes all through jr. high and high school who subjected him, and any other black kid who was WORKING HARD to make something of themselves, endless grief in the form of taunting, physical threats, and general bullying. Nice, huh?
Cool kids get failing grades is an attitude found in many public schools. I think it's great that kid overcame it, but if your parents are poor and you live in a poor community it's going to be hard no matter your skin color.
the us has some pretty diverse people and diverse opinions. For example, I live in the US and similar to bobby I blame the US government with its history of exploitation without negotiation in the middle east for provoking the attack. IN fact I think it serves as an example of the intrinsic failure of demoncracy among an uninformed and foolish population and i do not support the entire concept of democracy in this nation.
Even though it is correct the way you put it, the way he put it was as a Jewish conspiracy. Of course, this gives a pass to all the Christians, Muslims, and atheists involved in producing the tragedy of the Middle East. So it may sound like he was criticizing our government(which it deserves), he married that view with laying the fault on one religion, which is absurd.
Robert Fischer's true character came out while people were burning alive in the twin towers and he laughed about it. It excited him, as if he took personal pleasure in it.
Fischer was so afraid to play Karpov for the title that he had to quit chess for good. Since then until his death he had been experiencing a severe mental degradation. Nowadays very few people admire and remember him.
That would certainly explain why there are so many threads about him and so many heated arguments ! LOL

People that I know who admire Fischer remember when he won the world championship from the Soviets or admire his brilliant play. Where his racist remarks are concerned, they remind me of Michael Jackson fans who ignore his pedophilia.
The Michael Jackson/Woody Allen/Roman Polanski fans are very bizarre in ignoring the pedophilia claims. They would probably wonder what all the fuss is about Fischer. Artists and politicians usually get a pass for all kinds of horrible behaviour.
Let's not start the maelstrom of partial truths and over simplifications that arises every time a discussion even remotely involves the middleast. Likewise, stories about black people discouraging achievement don't justify shooting them, and it has nothing to do with Fischer.
He doesn't deserve a pass for the things he said. He deserves to be called out for it. Of course, people still admire his chess, like people admire Michael Jackson's music.
I generally agree that the rich and famous get away with many things that 'mere mortals' wouldn't. Please note that many paedophiles who've been caught, and some who've got away with it, have all had honours bestowed on them by Royalty; it seems to go with the territory. Many more are racist. Per title of the thread, what's Fischer said about 9/11?
Bobby made disgusting comments after the attack. The ones who didn't hear about them, you can google them out easily. Some may think he is a traitor and some may consider he was completely insane at that time. That's why I want the opinion of people born in the U.S.
