He needs to return to classical, win the candidates and challenge Gukesh for the title. The world wants to see their clash.

He doesn't need anything. And he plays classical.

They will get their clashes sooner or later. But Gukesh need to improve to have a chance to beat him.

I think in the entire year 2024 Magnus only played in the Olympiad. And 2025 is not an Olympiad year, so likely he will play no classical tournaments at all.

He also played Norway Chess 2024

He is quitting classical not rapid and blicts that's why he did not join the classical tournament so gukesh won

But we will probably not se him in FIDE tournaments after the jeans gate. The FIDE president tries to get him back, but the GOAT is a way bigger brand than FIDE, so why should he?

i spoke with him yesterday and he said he might or might not quit.

Do you mean he'll retire? Or set up his own federation (like Kasparov)? Or will he play exclusively online? That's practically equal to retirement.

No he will just continue playing his own tournaments (primarily frestyle chess) and online tournaments. He doesn't even have to make an organisation.

Obviously he doesn't have to do anything. But if he plays even less than he does now, that's practically retirement.

FIDE is not the same as chess.

Why would he leave at the top of his game?

BRO... He dont!

Avatar of Atharvaisagoodplayer

He has skipped rapid and blitz this year and I feel he is nearing his retirement. Of course he might participate next year but the chances are unlikely as he is already tired of fide

He plays more than most other top players. You can follow him play rapid, blitz, freestyle chess etc. almost every week. He just don't play much classical.

Avatar of DreamscapeHorizons

I hope he pursues the freestyle idea and has a lot of classical freestyle events. Freestyle needs to be nurtured along because the game as a whole is being way too overanalyzed with computer prep and opening memorization in general.

Avatar of Toldsted

Yes. Freestyle chess was the most fun chess to wach last year.

That's the equivalent of an NBA All-Star player leave the NBA and instead stream as he plays streetball with his friends.

Classical chess is the real chess, all other formats are just for fun.

Avatar of Toldsted

Well. That is not how the public sees it. And he has been playing way more classical games than most World Champions before him.
