Most beloved grandmaster

  Most every week we see the same boring thread, “who’s the greatest ever?” I’ll settle it for you, Fischer or Kasparov.

  A more interesting question might be “who is the most beloved GM?” Whose games bring you joy? Who was a cool cat? Personality matters.

  Alekhine played well, but as a jerk, a drunk, and a nazi collaborator he is off the list. I love Bobby myself, but do not see him beloved by many.

  My two unimpeachable candidates are Mikhail Tal and Vassily Ivanchuk. Doesn’t your smile light up when you tales of them at the board?

  I consider Eugenio Torre, actor, singer, and Bobby’s best friend (fantastic interview a few tears ago in NIC). How hard do you think it could be to Bobby’s pal in his later years, yet Eugenio enjoyed it all.

  Let me know what you think, I’ll mention Capablanca next time.

Max Euwe seemed like an all-round good guy. And Capa seemed nice, as you mentioned.

Tal was the first person who came to mind.  Is there anyone who doesn't like Seirawan?
