I am just a chess beginner so I play very slowly. One player,he swear to me with very rude words.I think this kind of person should not appears at chess.com I was really angry and sorry, don't know why he swears to me.

A-232

You have the right to play as quickly or slowly as you want.

willilo

You should report him if you remember his username for abuse pitcha, you shouldn't need to put up with this on chess.com

bjazz

If you play slow enough, you lose on time. A player either accepts or issues a challenge, and in both instances the time controls are fully visible to both players. I have a hard time understanding why these people take their time to complain. If they don't like the controls then why accept the challenge?

ElectricEel

I've met plenty of players on live chess who swear at me nonstop: one in particular comes to mind; he managed to swindle me about 5 times in a row (this was on 1 min time controls) because he plays so quickly. Then the following game I played well enough to checkmate him before the time ran out. Guess what? He starts swearing at me. And he's far from the only one I've met.

Don't worry about this player, as A-232 says it's up to you how long you take to move. I think the longer you are on chess.com the more you will find that the majority of people here are really friendly. I hope this one bad experience doesn't put you off playing chess. Chok Dee Khrap as they say in Thailand.

philidorposition

Block them, report them if you wish using the help & support link below, and don't worry about them anymore, such people are certainly in the minority.

SJCorrie

Yes, to block them and report the person certainly help. There was this one guy who was doing this to me (and others) and now, no more swearing or bad words!

stats_man

In over 800 games here, I can only remember 4 or so persons who were complete jerks. Just like real life, you will come across these.

One swore at me for perpetual checking him while down 2 passed pawns. But that was only added to my satisfaction...Foot in mouth

Hi guys,

I have been playing on Chess.com for 1 1/2 years.  No one has ever been rude to me.  Perhaps I have been lucky.

I read posts like this and am concerned.  In chess there is no reason for rudeness.  Particularly in online chess.  One gains nothing by being rude.  Our hobby should be the primary example to the world of good sportsmanship.  One cannot really gain any advantage by being rude.  If you encounter a rude player on Chess.com you should report it at once.  Let the Chess.com staff deal with the problem player.

Watch your back rank.

I have heard of this.  But so far I have been lucky.  Any interactions with others have been pleasant.  I suspect one is likely to run into some bad sportsmanship here eventually, simply because there are so many members.

Just a couple of people on live chess sweared in my games. Block them right away and you'll never see them again. As for such rude behaviour on the internet in general, don't worry, people will always think they're stronger or something when they're anonymous. You'll see them everywhere. Just block them and never fall down to their level.

As a side note, I was 15 minutes away from timing out but stuff happens - I was away from a computer for a long time. I managed to win that game Laughing

Isn't it possible to turn off the chat in live chess like you can in turn based?

Oh, yes, you can.

slvnfernando

You are entitled to play at your own speed as long as you are within the stipulated time period.  As for the swearing type who does not know the meaning of sportsmanship, you can report him to the site administration so that they can look in to his behaviour and decide accordingly.

Cystem_Phailure

Just curious-- what happens if player A blocks player B, and then they end up being assigned to the same group in a tournament?  Does blocking affect only messaging and not possible future match-ups for games?

TheGrobe

Good question.  I'm pretty sure it affects the ability to accept seeks and issue/accept direct challenges, but I have to imagine that tournament match-ups would need to override a block.

You should report the individual.  A few years ago I stopped playing on yahoo chess because the cussing, verbal abuse, postering, punk bevavior got to be too much trouble.  On chess.com I have found all opponents to be good sports.  99% of us play around the world because we enjoy the game.  To other the 1%, dont go away mad, just go away.

TheGrobe

The difference is that Yahoo! chess is completely unmoderated.  The owner and staff of this site take an interest in the type of community they are fostering here, so you can trust that your report will be taken seriously and that if it was an egregious enough violation that action will follow.
