Indeed! 1975. Came time for Fischer to defend his title, and Karpov had earned the right to challenge him. But Fischer refused to play,  and Kaprov became WCC by default.

Fischer also never play played a single game while Champion. Much to the disappointment of the world public. Was like he was not interested in promoting chess at all.

i would say Mikhail Tal... the guy was pure genius at its best.. i love how he threw caution to the wind and played the best chess i have had the previledge to witness

kasparov reigned as chamion for 15 years. He stepped up to the plate, and defended his title. He even defended it against Karpov, the very player who made Fischer tuck tail and run.

Kasparov also played chess while World Champion. He wasn't scared. he proved time and time again he was the best in the world.

As did Karpov during his reign.

Fischer got the title from Spassky, and then fell off the face of the earth. Only returning for a return match with Spassky 20 years later, when both were well past their prime. (Which he dubbed the World Chess Championship. To show how removed he was from reality.)

So, to answer your question, Fischer succeeeded right up to the part where he got the title. Then it was solid Fail after that.

Arguement could be made Fischer was the worst WCC ever. I wouldn't disagree.

Efim Geller and Reuben Fine enjoyed beating the c...out of so-called best players. So they were the best of the best. Kasparov was Boris Gulko punching bag.
