Well I've just notice that chessocity got a diamond membership, I say congratulation. This is to do with chessocity helping erik on 'clock hacking' and was promise the diamond member reward if could he prove it that 'clock hacking' exist. So my questions for erik and staff, are you doing anything done about it? If anyone is caught clock hacking is that class as cheating ?  "Clock Hacking is cheating." supplied by Niven42, thank you.  Is there many peoples doing it, how can we protect ourselves ? Is this only occur in live chess or does it happen on turn based as well ?

kco

Are you able to thwart it ?

artfizz

The topic of cheating - though fascinating - is not permitted in the main forum.

kco

I am not talking about cheating here, I am referring to 'clock hacking'

Sounds to me like discussion about cheating.

kco

well, is it ?

Niven42

Clock Hacking is cheating.  If you had a clock that was tampered with in a FIDE/USCF tourney, you'd be disqualified.

Don't be surprised if Erik doesn't tell you anything.  If you cheat, it's better if the admins don't tell you when they're coming for you.  Sends a pretty strong message.

kco

Have you read the thread that I have posted ?

kco

Ok let me put it in another way....
First of all I am not interested in the cheating, not interested how to clock hacking nor how the staff catch them.

Is chessocity helping you erik ? yes/no if yes, wonderful. If not, chessocity a liar ? Is there a widespread problem with the clock hacking ? yes/no if yes, are are you catching them suscessfully if yes, wonderful. Any other questions I should ask you that is worthwhile ?

This reminds me of the Colin Powell Saturday Night Live skit during the 1991 Gulf War, when reporters were asking him questions such as "What is the most damaging thing the enemy could possibly do to us, against which we have no defense?" and "Which Iraqi method of hiding Scud missiles has proven most troublesome to you?" Cool

This thread is very interesting to me in light of a recent episode I just experienced in a current CC game of mine.  My opponent was moving rapidly and making several moves a day and sometimes several moves in an hour. I started attacking and suddenly he is lost ( and should resign ) and now he slows to a snail's pace making only a move every few days. I got up one morning and noted he had 6 hours to move so I figure I will get a move today...... 8 or more hours later I note he now has more than 6 hours to move !!?  I thought, hmmmm.... maybe I made a mistake with what I saw in the first place and went to bed that night and he still hadn't moved. I got up the next day and now he has more than 24 hours to move ?!!  How is this even possible ?!  Is there some bug or are people able to hack the clocks here ?

kco

Reb is could be either way but I am not interested in it because that is almost as talking about cheating here in which I am not going to talk about it. Smile

I've seen a few people who've had similar problems. I think a bug crept in when they introduced the minimum 24 hours vacation, but I'm not certain.

kco

If is it a bug just report it. Cheating and clock hacking is happening, period. But hopefully not widespread. No need to be alarmist.

I think he traveled back a few timezones

woton

When the vacation policy was changed, the following feature was added for premium members:  if auto timeout protection activates and the member turns vacation off before 24 hours has elapsed, the remaining time is added to their clocks.  This wasn't announced.  I found out about it after contacting support when one of my opponent's time increased several hours without their having made a move.

This is all very confusing !  I thought if your auto vacation protection kicks in you are charged for 24 hours MINIMUM ?!  Now you say if they turn it off before its been 24 hours they get time added back to their clock ?!  HHmmmmmmmm  I didnt know CC chess has increments !?  I dont see why a member would ever have time added back to his clock in CC chess ?!

The time added is corroborated here.  http://www.chess.com/forum/view/suggestions/new-auto-vacation-rule

"This is to prevent "vacation" time being used to just manage an over-loaded games list. - but removal of 24 hours from vacation time, in turn adds 24 hours onto the game clock, hence the time difference. One day is still lost from vacation time though.".
