cool!

Final thought by me - as there are people who find this feature desirable, why not make it an option for paying members and totally no access to this feature for non-paying members. This would satisfy everyone - chess.com will get more premium members who see value in this feature and won't scare off nonpaying members who find this feature a defect of the site.

I used to be a free member and i didnt find the current amount of advertizing to be too obnoxious.  If i recall correctly it was all banner ads on the top and bottom of each page.  I could see how this additional source of ads could be annoying especially if they were pop up ads.  To me it seems like the reward is a little too small for the percieved annoyance.  If i would like to chat with my friends on chess.com i will use the chat features already available.

Erik,

If and only if it's an opt-in choice instead of an opt-out choice for premium members.

Regards, Mike

also not an option. but would be very easy to disable in your preferences.

I vote no (sorry but I really dislike instant messaging, it's just too distracting).

Actually, if I came to this site and it gave popups, I would not have stayed on it and would have left immediately. I don't think I'm the only one in the internet with this kind of behaviour.

No. Don't mix up "chess" with "whatever, (and chess too)".

I understand that for someone the "community" and the "social networking" is important, but what is the direction: a social network where you can play chess, or a chess site (with a strong community but focused, mainly, on chess)?

I myself would really like it, finally when I'd see a friend online I could instantly tell them to log into live chess without using notes. But I'm worried that this bar will be too distracting to a lot of members.

Yes and no erik

yes in which we can talk with other members quickly but no if the ad's go in to the page( like it has before) and disturbes my game and i have to click on another part of the screen to get rid of it but i would like it as long as it didn't do that

No, It's a great idea in concept, however the existing message system is fine, and if you must have IM, go to facebook or something and chat there. If the person you want to IM doesn't have one, then they probably don't want to IM in the first place.

Sounds like another improvement. Good idea.

I don't currently use any chat tools or social networks - I'm more of an email guy. It sounds like this proposal would enable you to have multi-way conversations, as well as one-to-ones. Much as I enjoy the odd exchange with an opponent during a game, and have lobbied for a larger chat window - I personally would find it too distracting to chat in real time while playing - as opposed to the present slow interactions (Notes, Messages) and opponent-only chat box.

I wouldn't use the proposed new facility but as long as it wasn't obtrusive, I probably wouldn't notice it.

Since Meebo refuses to let everyone have the option to turn it off, my answer is no. How obnoxious of them.

I havent really used that bloated, poorly designed, hard to navigate piece of junk that is facebook for probably about a year now.  The chat thing they introduced just came across as yet more bloat.  It was not nice to use and was added clutter.  Sometimes I just want to open a website and check, say what is happening in forum topics I have posted in, or if there are any new articles or whatever.  I dont want to have to worry about setting my IM status for every website I use, and I dont want endless stupid messages about people signing in.  I already have msn doing this, and on occasion steam, which at least I could turn off if I had lots of people on there.  If my internet connection was better I'd likely have xfire bothering me too.  Just how many different chat windows does one person need?  Undecided

Yes, provided I have an option to disable it temporarily.

Avatar of kmeirlaen

I can think of many reasons why people would like it!

So chat: yes

but Meebo: no, thank you

I'm still trying to figure out how disrupting the meebo ads are.

Are they like, the really loud "click here to win free prize" banner ads with music or are they less disruptive ones? Do the ads only popup when you chat or just arbitrarily? I think this question needs to be answered first.

I think the idea is forward and progressive.

I do have a few points that need clarification to better understand the offer:

1. How does one activate this type of chat, is it automatic and we can disable it if not wanted or do we need to activate ourselves?

2. What equipment do I need for my PC, a microphone only, anything else?

3. Is the chat option available for Windows, Mac and Linux OS?

4. Can it be possible to add video, i.e see your opponent if she/he accepts?

5. Would Skype not be another option? You get both audio and video, provided that you have a web cam.

6. How often do the adds pop up twice an hour? or...

7. What type or category of adds will be presented? Insurance, travelling, or...? And how long do they last? 15 seconds, 30 seconds or...?

Hope to hear about the questions.

This type of chat isn't vocal, it's typed, but the messages are sent quickly to the other person and you don't have to use notes/PMs

It's not for me but it sounds like an obvious improvement and a real extension to what chess.com provides.  I expect I'll turn it off but if it appeals to a lot of users (which I believe it will) then it should be added.

The more (genuinely useful) functionality chess.com offers the more attractive it's going to be to new users.
