Hey erik, you should sell chess boards!

The roll-up kind.  Probably not a huge markup on them but hey, it's free advertising.  Just have chess.com printed on the sides & a little chess.com logo on the a1 square or some such.

Like in this style (but with our name & logo) :

If you make this idea a reality send me a free one & I'll wear it out baby, on the streets of NY & wherever else I go! Laughing

I imagine it would be a hassle to actually "make" these yourself but maybe you could have an affliate like WholeSaleChess design them & sell them for you.

Just an idea.  Let me know what you think. Smile

Narz

Yeah, he can sell chess pieces to go with the board, of course.

What do you think Erik?

Narz

Erik?  What do you say?

Erik, I too await your response.

This is definitely an interesting idea.

Just like you, anyone will like this idea if the board is free. However, if there's a price tag on it, including shipping costs etc., alot less people will get such a board, and so it's the question whether it's worth it.

Maybe erik can first set up some sort of poll like "Would you buy a Chess.com branded chess board, if it cost xxx$?", or perhaps more generally, "What chess material would you purchase from Chess.com?" and wait for some results.

Or, you could have BoardsofChess.com design them for you.  No reason to stop the design at just a name and logo.  Check out my website to see what I mean.  They could look like wood, marble, goo, glass, etc.  Because my boards are printed in the U.S., they do cost a bit more.

i'm not in the chess retail business :) i'll leave it to these guys: http://www.chess.com/stores

people said we should do shirts, hats, etc. so we did. http://www.chess.com/members/store.html

and how many people have purchased them? 3. yes, three. :)

Narz

I have to admit bro, those are pretty nice! Cool

Narz

You shouldn't have listened to the shirt guys, you should listen to me. Wink

I may not have purchased my Chess.com T-Shirt (got it free with platinum membership), but I wear it a lot.  So much so, that when I renew my membership, I was thinking how cool it would be if there was a different design each year.  You may have been a pawn originally, but now it seems far too insignificant to accurately represent this great site.  Maybe you could build the pieces each year for the first few years, the 2nd year shirt is a knight, 3rd year a bishop, 4th year a rook, 5th year a queen, and 6th year a king.  There would need to be different sayings too.  I like both of your licence plate quotes: "Yes, it does mean I'm smarter than you." and "Chess players make better mates."  Of course, if you do make a new shirt design, and you do go with the knight to represent year two, May I request that it be a Dark KnightCool

I'd rather get a board than a t-shirt even though the actual cost of a shirt retail is more.  Probably others feel the same (given how few have bought a shirt).
