Wow... 1800 rated. I can only imagine how much hell it would be if I went that far in chess.

Gah, most have no idea; it is a lot of work...luckily, time flies and if you keep improving then one day years later, you realize you just made it that far grin.png

You can play chess variants for a change when you feel burning out. I recommend Chess 960.

Variants like 960 were fun for me, but it wasn't because it was different from "chess" - it worked for me because I didn't care about that rating! It is good to have at least one or two categories set aside that you don't care as much about I think; either that or play unrated more. With a category like 960 that you don't care about, you can turn your intense thinking "off" and just mess around for fun and that helps a lot with mentally recharging when needed.

I'd really love to try 960 but I can't seem to find any opponents in that variant. Takes forever to load.

What time control did you choose?

Marcyful

3 and 5 minutes

Don't get rid of your chess sets and books yet.  I have had many "I can't anymore" moments in my life but I kept coming back later.  The last time this happened, fallout 4 came out.  Also when skyrim came out, I was so addicted to that game that chess was a lot less fun in comparison.

Choose 10 minutes if you want an opponent fast.

NOOOOOOOOOOOO don't go, chess is about struggle. You will eventually rebound. I suggest you analyze games of the greats. You can get games from https://www.chess.com/games. Write in your analysis and you will eventually improve and rebound. That and study tactics and openings ect.

Your rating is much higher than mine. My (former) chess coach (I would't recommend--he took my money and disappeared for three months) told me not to play anything faster than 15/10 for learning purposes. I play a lot of daily and when I get bored or want somthing different, I play 15/10. I find that, if I lost quite a few games, I just need to take a short break and play a different time control.

When you feel giving up just think about why you started playing chess.

IMO your prob never going to be a GM so basically chess is just for fun, i really don't worry about my rating, though I have never passed 1400, I have fluctuated 200 points  down, then end up winning them back when I get on a hot streak, honestly you shouldn't take it as anything but a hobby to have fun with, if all your worried about is rating I would say stop playing

The only real loss is losing the love of the game -- counting points and wins and not being in the moment, losing sight of thrill of the challenge, the fun!  Yes! Of course it is more 'fun' when one wins a game -- but a winning game is always going to be there waiting, tomorrow! (Yes, so is -- in all likelihood a losing game too! Such is life, and such is The Game!) Do not leave -- it will be a regret -- playing Chess is frustrating, but never a regret!

In any event -- be happier than when this note was typed! wink.png

All the best!

Thank you all for the kind and motivating replies, I really do appreciate it! I didn't expect this type of feedback and it was refreshing to see such a caring community.

I decided I'm going to be only playing long games (1 hour) at my club for the time being till I feel confident in my chess again.

It would help if you stop resigning immediately after you opponent makes a mistake.  Look at the analysis of your last game...  Opponent takes a "poisoned pawn" and you resigned...  Why?

Hi everyone. I am feeling extremely frustrated and demotivated and this is the only place that I can vent my frustration so apologies if this wastes anyone's time.

Up until about 2 months ago I was playing and studying chess daily. It was extremely fun and satisfying to keep on learning and improving. Unfortunately this led to me burning out, as I tend to take things to the extremes when I enjoy something, and I went on a hiatus for a few months.

Now recently I came back into it, playing here and there, and then the first "night grind" started. I sat down the one Friday night and decided to start seriously playing again. Loss after loss started rolling in and my frustration started building. At first I thought ah well what the heck, I'm probably on tilt or just tired or something, and so I closed the site and did something else, but unfortunately for my sanity, the losing didn't stop...

I played for a few days and things weren't getting better. I kept losing in the most ridiculous ways and the frustration built up so much that I just snapped... so I think I'm just done with chess. I can't do this anymore. About 300 rating points down the drain later and it feels as though all the hard hours of work I put into this game the past couple of years were wasted. I no longer have the energy nor the motivation to play.

Again, apologies if this little venting session wasted your time, but I just needed to get this out of my system.

Thank you to anyone who took the time reading this in full.

That's happening to me right now.

Many are trying really hard be a 1800 chess.com rapid like you. But you are quitting. I feel like quitting if I see 2500 online players.  But okay I won't compare myself to others, I will just keep on playing. I keep on studying. Burnout after burnout. And I am enjoying it.
