What would it take to finally push you over the edge?

I love everything about this site! I have really enjoyed being able to make friends, learn a few new things, but most of all play chess. The only reason that I haven't "gone over" yet is because I am currently in school full time and the only time that I get to play is when I work at my part time job (2-4 days a week). I don't have internet at home so this severely limits the amount of time that I would like to spend on the site to improve my game. When I graduate and start working full time and making some real money, I will most definitely spend the money to gain access to everything the site has to offer. I also feel like in this time span, Erik and the rest of the staff will have created even more impressive features for the site and truely make chess.com the ultimate gaming website on the planet.

The tournement and the tactic trainer are good reason.  But I decided to pay because this site is so great.  Erik and is team did a good job, so I was happy to give them some cash.

X2 the same reason here, is fantastic !!

The Tactics Trainer got me to upgrade to a premium and Chess Mentor was the reason I upgraded as I wanted more time. I also like the ability to run a tournament for more than 12 people. The quality of the site, the tools and the community are well worth the price of the membership.

I also made the switch from free to paid for the auto-timeout protection and extended access to Tactics Trainer (even tho I haven't been using this feature lately).  I switched from silver to platinum primarily for the extra tournament options (create a tournament with 100 players instead of just 12) and all the other benefits that come with it (look at everyone's full stats page, the free gold membership that I gave to my daughter cuz she loves doing the tactics trainer, and the cool Chess.com T-shirt that I kept for myself  ).

I agree with Billium, except I did it after playing some for free and went to the Platinum level as my initial subscription.  The unlimited Tactics trainer and unlimited conditional moves were perhaps the most important incentives for me as I felt they would both contribute to my development.  I had originally planned to give the gold membership to my nephew, but when his enthusiasm seemed to wane as i beat him......  I ended up giving it to a friend who I brought to the site and whose enthusiasm justified the gift.  The key thing is that I feel good about contributing to the site, when I have derived such enjoyment.

although.....if i don't start working more and playing less...... funding anything in the future may become problematic!  Does anyone know if there is an 800 number for chess players anonymous?  My chess addiction may be getting out of control!

Vell, I'm no psychiarist but... I suspect zee mistake you are makink is to WIN TOO MANY of your gamez. I can ztate, vith zee utmost confidence zat, if only you would lose a FEW MORE GAMEZ - (and I recommend you begin your loozink streak against players with names ztartink with "A", zen "B", and zo on) - zees addiction vould zoon be completely under control.

Billium248

I forgot about being able to make additional lines in the conditional moves.  Yeah, that was another thing I was looking for.  I can take forever to make my move sometimes, so I really like to set up a whole bunch of conditional lines so that the game moves along a little faster.  Being able to create only one line was frustrating.

Why pay for something you can get for free?

Even with the use of "whatever-trainer", very little of us will become grandmasters.. And even then, what is the value in that, commercially or otherwise?

Because it keeps the system running and everybody happy, for less than a penny a day who can whinge,Ebineezer?

Evil_Homer

I paid up to support the site.

If you want something to be around for a while then you have to expect to pay a little, otherwise one day you'll log on only to find the site has closed down due to lack of finance.

These things don't build themselves and time, manpower and other resources are required.

Nachos

im only really interested in the chess mentor at this stage, but its too expensive for me at the moment(unlimited i mean).

Chessroshi

Will there be punch and pie? That's the selling point to me. Actually the only thing that has kept me from paid membership is my van that decided to die and burden me with a car payment. I'll be setting some dough aside though, as I really do enjoy this site. I personally would like more access to my game stats so I can chart training progress more readily. And I want a star too, my handle just looks so lonely : (

So why did you chose the budget memberships. Aka the cheap "rear-end" membership.

For me it is the thought that for many years I had no one to play chess with, now I do and if my $30.00 a year helps to keep this site going so that I can have someone to play, I am glad to pay it.

Now my math might be a little fuzzy here (fourth grade was a long time ago), but wouldn't "less than a penny a day" come out to roughly "less than $3.65 a year"?  The gold membership looks to me like it costs slightly more than that...

I hope this isn't the beginning of buyer's remorse for you, thegab03!

 Touché!

earltony15

the main reason I upgraded was because I thought it was the "right thing" to do.  this site has given me so much pleasure that I happily became a premium member.

Ray_Brooks

I knew I would never be truly happy here unless I had the little crown thingy. Embarassed

Minato

this site is awesome and I feel like I owe all the great staff some money for the great experience I'm having with this site, but I'm still a kid and I'm broke! too bad too cause I would love to use tactics trainer more and the tutor and be in more than one tournament at a time :( but if I still like chess as much as I do now when I get some money I'm going all the way to the lifetime membership!

TheMoonwalker

I want a membership but I know that I will have too much school work so I cant spens much time on chess :(

However, in about 8 years time I will get one (lol)
