Why Do People Post Pictures of Themselves Here?

Sort:
StairwayToTruth

Don't get me wrong - I'm very open-minded and am not strictly against doing this. However, when you consider the fact that thousands of people (including a lot of creepy, sketchy ones) may look at your photographs and / or see your name... Well, something clicks in me to avoid any such thing. I severely doubt anything bad would happen if I posted my picture up here. But it's still very discomforting. Maybe I'm just thinking this over too much - but this is a website for CHESS, after all.

What do you guys / girls think?

StairwayToTruth

I absolutely am, tonydal. Indeed, this is the exact reason you should not have posted that picture of yourself. Now beware. Even though I've admitted myself, this relationship is not yet over. In fact, it's just begun. ;)

On a (less?) serious note, I'd still like to know the opinions of people who've actually posted pictures of themselves. Thanks. :)

We are all but pawns in this business, tonydal. We're just pawns in this kingdom of Erik: chess.com.

What you must really wonder about is getting promoted in this business. If you're male, do you really have to change gender to be a very valuable staff member?

it didn't work? (dang)

I must say, your puns are becoming more and more obvious. I'm impressed (not to mention impressionable).

How does a picture of myself giveaway my location?

StairwayToTruth

kco, I'm going to take a wild guess and say that you live in Perth, Australia, and if I go there knowing what you look like and what your name is, there's a chance that I will find you, especially if I'm a professional stalker. :)

On a serious note, I'm not scared of this. I'm a bit freaked by the fact that people would see me... but I don't see them back. o_O

It helps to have some image to recognise a person - when a picture changes I get really thrown.

It would be interesting to set up a study where you get helf a second to see a picture + nearby name & location and say who it is, including some with similar colours and garbled (though similarly shaped) name + location.

It is no big deal. Stop being paranoid. This is ALSO a place for friends.

Do you always wear that 'no photo' sign across your chest?

rooperi

I wish someone would stalk me : (

kco

Hey ! tonydal also wear that.

They'd already run out of numbers for my mugshot.

The opposite question why-so-many-people-with-no-avatar has also provoked comment; not to mention the actual selection of image why-that-avatar and seasonal variations a-christmas-present-for-the-quotno-photoquot-avatar-brigade. Although there are many reasons-to-not-post-a-member-photo-avatar, it seems the way to draw attention to yourself and become a greater stalker target risk is precisely to use the default image.

StairwayToTruth

artfizz, is the equivalent of the iron fist of irony? Will it always catch up to me? Will I always be stuck between a rock and a hard place [the hard place preferably being made of iron]?

Any puns there may be deemed unintentional. However, in the context of the previous statements, I don't think anybody should really have to think twice about it anymore.

GRUNKK

I am so grotesque looking that no one would dare to stalk me, let alone even stand in my pressence.

OK, what I find really creepy is that your picture looks exactly like mine.  Are you stalking me or something?

Hence, you feel the need to see others' faces as yours. The beauty of their outer face strikes you silly... you must come near them. You must see their face, feel their face, absorb their face, BE their face. And the only way... is to stalk. You - YOU are the one we most fear. The stalker who doesn't even realize that he is stalking. YOU are what we fear most. YOU are GRUNKKED, baby!

Standing in front of an identifiable landmark could increase your susceptibility to stalkiness.
